Default The road to Independence disscusion

The Road to Independence. This is a single player campaign mode in which the player
fights the British to gain independence in America

Since it doesn't replace a pre-existing feature I don't see any reason why CA shouldn't make it. If done well it will be a change of pace and a nice little story driven campaign, if done badly then no one actually has to play it.

    I don't see a downside really.

There is only a limited amount of development time to go around. Time spend on this isn't spend on some other feature.
The less of that time is spend pandering to our trans-Atlantic friends and the more is put in to increasing the core game value the better. As such I'm not in favour of The Road to Independence. Doesn't help in the least that I'm more sympathetic to the Redcoats then the tax dodging, tea throwing Colonials.

I can't vote, but I think it's a good idea. As Sir Beane said, its not changing/removing anything, so why not?

    I choose undecided, here's why.

Overall I am against the 13 colonies as a major faction of a EMPIRE total war game, as it is not a empire till after (if you wish to call it that.)

Now, that said, it's done. It's made, it's in the game, it's playable. If something is playable and in the game, I will play it. If it's broke and useless, at least it dosn't interfere with main game, if it is fun, and people like it, you can look forward to more story driven campaigns in other TW games.

As I understand it, it is the tutorial campaign. Perhaps a bit more extensive and polished than in the last two games, but still the tutorial.

I enjoyed the one included in RTW and see no reason that this time would be any different.

    Can I sense excitement?

"ENEMY INFANTRY ARE ABOUT TO SHOOT YOUR MEN. THIS IS BAD!"

"ENEMY ELEPHANTS ARE ABOUT TO FLATTEN YOUR GENERAL. You might want to do something"

"Your best troops are being targeted by- nevermind, I was too late, they're all dead now."

It would be nice if the advisers had a little bit of personality this time around. They could compliment/insult you depending on how well/badly you are doing on the battle and campaign maps.

"Well done sir, you just charged your cavalry straight into pikemen. idiot."

"Did you really think putting your riflemen behind your general was a good idea? I would have said something but I assumed it was obvious. Now he's dead from friendly fire. Congrats."

"Well done sir! That's the fifth country you've invaded and taken this turn! How do you do it?"

I'm too hardcore for a tutorial campaign.

Go to this website and watch the clip.
    http://www.totalwar.com/
it tells about the RTI or Road to Independence
Watching it starts to look more special feature than Tutorial
Not to go against you FisherKing for as far as I know
    you could be right

Just to clear up the Tutorial issue.

Yes. The Road to Independance will function as a Tutorial. However CA seem to be aiming to make it more complex. I believe while the beginning is a tutorial the later chapters will be more akin to the normal campaign, except with story and fixed goals.

So yes we will probably see some advisor lectures at the start and so on. After all that is over it will just be a story driven campaign, which will probably be worth playing through once even if you know what you are doing.

For what it's worth CA have stated repeatedly that it will have something to offer to veterans of the series. Whether you believe that or not is your call.

A campaign tutorial is a good idea and this is a suitable scenario having as it does such a very discreet victory condition. Succeed or hang!

I did do intend to confuse the issue with the Tutorial part.

Rome had a Tutorial Campaign which wasn’t bad and could be replayed. I felt that RTI served the same purpose, though granted it is a bit more in-depth and details a faction that does not start out in the game.

It starts in 1607 with the founding of Jamestown and runs at least through the Revelation. It may even go on a bit more…that 1820 date may have been a part of this campaign.

It is story driven and should be of interest to most people, which ever side of the Atlantic you come from…you may even learn something.

The parts, as near as I understand them, are: The founding of Jamestown and its defense against the Native Tribes.

The French and Indian War corresponding to the 7 years war, but lasted 9 years there.

    The American Revolution.

And mentioned in one summery, a fourth part in the main campaign.

I don’t know if it takes you into the War of 1812 or just allows you to finish off as the Americans, in which case you are sure to loose…or if it is totally different from that.

It is all still guess work until we see the game. Then maybe it will be plane to all if it is a bang or a bust.
