    Default On City Names Changing

Hello my fellow Hellenes and Barbarians,

do you know how to add characters like "-" and accents to a city name when you rename a city? Because it doesn't seem to take it. Copy and Paste also doesn't work. Is there perhaps a file where the current settlement names are stored that I could alter?

Also, I'd like to hear some suggestions for Hellene city-names from you! I need alternatives for...

    • Sucum-Murgi
    • Ak-Ink
    • Mtskheta (sp)
    • Buridava
    • Sarmiszegethusa
    • Arsé (Sagounton?)

The game engine doesn't allow for complex characters ingame.
So, there is no way to change city names to anything other than simple thing with the name chage feature.

Arsé wasn't named ingame. It will understand and display complex characters, it just won't let your write them ingame.

    Well i could suggest one:

Sarmiszegethusa - Sarmatiopolis or maybe a greek term for "city of the Sarmatians".
“Save us, o Lord, from the arrows of the Magyars.” - A prayer from the 10th century.

The script also got confused if you changed names in game, or has that been remedied in the recent updates?

No, there is no way to remedy it in the RTW engine. With M2TW it won't be a problem.

Well, but I don't think there are many Sarmatians in Sarmiszegethusa.

That name probably hasn't much to do with Sarmatians, but rather with being the Capital Seat of a particular powerful ruler (Sarmis being a Royal Dacian/Getian title -- yes you can learn a lot from reading old threads... )

Changing city names generally is a bad idea. Some script triggers check if a certain city has condition X, and as RTW does not assign IDs to the cities independently from the name the trigger only can call upon the direct name. So if you change the name the appropiate trigger can't fire....

Oops... I must have mixed it up with one of the citys on the steppes.

Thanks for the corection. Atleast I've learned something new

Some trait triggers use the internal name and are uneffected by name changes. Unfortunately some triggers require the external (visible) name and are messed up with name changes.

If you never plan to loose the settlement and don't have any more reforms coming, changing the settlement name won't do too much damage.

    Chaire, Mega Basilea!

I'll be right to the point, I believe you could just leave Arsé as it is (it sounds Hellenic enough to me anyway). As for the rest of the poleis, it's quite complex... Don't know if it's worth your time to rename them. My advice: Just leave them as they are

Keep teaching those Barbaroi who's boss

Thanks for the advice so far.

I already renamed Arsé to Sagounton and I couldn't go back to Arsé, just to Arse.

These barbarian names are just so stinky. Mtskheta could be Nikopolis. That's correct, right?

    What about Ak-Ink as "Antiocheia-Istrou" - I could use the existing "-" I think.

    Sucum-Murgi = Nikaia-Hesperia (victory inside) / Nikaia-Tourdouli...?

A problem I'm having is that many of the Gawjams are impossible to write in the console..

    For example

    add_population Swebotraustamnoz 40000 works, but add_population 9001 Gawjam~Whatthefookistan
doesn't work, because it uses so many confusing accent marks and the dreaded ~ which I can't type into the console.

Any way around this? IE-What is the "real" name of these settlements, what would I type in the console.

You should check imperial_campaign_regions_and_settlement_names.txt in the text folder of your EB data folder (EB/data/text)

But these are the 'real' Gawjam names:

Sounds good, but really I don't see the point of changing the names. I also remember it does affect something like the EBBS script and stuff.

    So this is grammatically correct?

You don't see the point? OK
    • I find some names to be exceedingly ugly
    • I don't like the barbarian towns on the campaign map, that's why I blow population up to obtain the Hellene city model - then I want a Hellene name too
    • Changing city names pleases me, as I am the conqueror and shape the world to my will
    • I'm not afraid of the EBBS script, since I won't get any complicated reforms
    • most of the cities I can easily rename back and did so already to get my Victory Screen
    • I rename cities only that I'm sure I won't lose again

Yeah, they are correct. And now I see your point But in that case, you shouldn't be asking for names. I mean, it's a matter solely up to you

Nah, it's just that it's matter of personal taste, meaning you probably won't agree with any of us here
