I believe realistic server capacity for MMO's these days is around 1000 players max, although much depends on the system and client requirements. A low-end f2p MMO like Runescape has 1200 max, a more elaborate P2P the Battlefield series has 64 max.
What's the max server capacity for Wow actually? I never played the game. They seem to have huge issues because everyone wants to play on specific worlds and in specific parts of the sandbox as well, which leads to clogging and lag and severely deminished gameplay.
Anyhoo, that's today. I was asked to dream. So I dream of mega-servers offering persistent worlds with different realms in which members can chose their adherence in accordance with the political system they prefer. You want to be the subject of a clan-based kingship? A republic with elected leaders? A democracy with a huge town hall?
The armies would be those of the realm you live in and 'belong' to. Mind you, your realm can be conquered by a neighbouring realm and you will be subject to the new overlords. Will you keep to yourself, withdraw into the mountains and resist, or join the new powers-that-be and make a career in their ranks? You have friends, too - is there going to be a split in your ranks because of the new political situation? If you want to resist the new rulers, how do you gather an army and recapture the capital? Do you elect new leaders in exile? What weapons do you need to gather (and train with) to stand a chance? How do you get enough food to feed your companions until the time is there?
Hmm, fascinating..
