Default Where did the commentary go?

I don`t know if anyone else is aware of this but when I first played the original version of Shogun I can remember hearing funny voice overs when your harvests were gathered. I remember laughing as they guy would tell me my lazy peasants needed whipping or something. Does anyone know why these comments are no longer there?

Well my history of STW is of playing the original patched up to 1.12. I didn't get the game immediately when it came out IIRC, probably about a year later. I probably would have installed it followed by one of the patches. So I don't remember those voices overs. The voice over for "Noble Lord! Excellent news: You have a son!" is there as well as the poems that are read out when a faction dies out.

I do remember that in the original the province boundaries were more solid and joined together and that general's stars didn't appear on the map pieces.

Now that I think of it though, I seem to have a vague recollection of this and now it's bugging me...

It`s certainly odd they are no longer there. Obviously I have no idea how these kind of decisions are made but I can`t understand why these would have been removed, I can`t find an option to turn anything on that is not already on. I want them back damnit!

Yeah they were removed by accident I think. Just like there's one geisha assassination video that never shows up in game.

The files can be found in: \Shogun - Total War\Voices\Throne\Messenger\

I've always wondered, as there are files relating to them in there as well as elsewhere, why were the Chosokabe clan omitted?

    Can these files be reactivated?

I'm 99.99% sure that they cannot. Something in the event code points to those files and for some reason that was stopped. Sasaki mentions them being removed by accident but if you remember there used to be a problem with crashing at the harvests and it may have been connected to those sound files. So perhaps CA disabled them on purpose, though I'm not sure either way.

I am also clearly remember the sound of the harvest reporter villager, and the poems.. With MI they were gone, which is too bad decision.

But i remember i founded more intresting files, the "mid-battle speeches" files... It was the report of the battle from your soldier, says "the battle goes well" or "our army is wavering" etc... I figured these are designed to give the player an idea about the battle's situation, and i thought there must be a way to activate them on options menu. But there wasnt...

Weird thing is, even producers didnt included these sounds in game, they still keep preparing the of files and putting it to the source. In MI, there is a voice of Mongol reporter. Im not sure but i think i found same kind of voices in MTW too, which is never used.

This idea finally become real on M2TW. We hear our reporter at the middle of the battle says "My lord! the tide of battle have turned agains us..." etc...

Its nice to know that mid-battle reports innovation on today's M2TW, is actually a 10 years old idea...

The Chosokabe was not omiited, it was simply made into the Shimazu. The names of the clan Daimyos/leaders still apear in units trained in Tosa and Shikoku.

You can actually see the Chosokabe in the intro video of Shogun (they have the same green the Shimazu were given) - while Kyushu is completely empty; they appear in the campaign map that shows the clans grow. The narrator says "Japan is divided between ruthless warlords; armies grow stronger only to be depleted in the frequent vicious battles that give this era its deserving name... etc" at about that time iirc.

Sasaki is right, the harvest voices (and some others too?) were removed in MI/WE. They do appear in the original versions 1.0/1.12 and its really funny to hear the voice of the retainer getting more and more anxious as he has to deliver bad news to the Daimyo/player or his enthusiasm when he has good news.

"My Lord! Your steward and peasants are worthy of your punishment! This year's harvest is very pooor... Storehouses may be empty before SpRink"

"Excellent news my Lord! This year's harvest was better than many in recent memory!
Our storehouses are overflowing, and even the peasants grow fat!"

Man, I miss the voice over also. I have both versions, and it wouldn't be possible to replace the new sound file with the old one?

    hello ed,

i think that the MI/WE still has the voices for the harvest etc, i have the impression that its some trigger in the exe that was taken out. However i may be wrong. In any case you can play the old original version after patching it to 1.12 - its very good.
