    Do you think it would unbalance the game terribly to make all units general units?

    What are you talking about?

    You can only have one general unit per faction...

    Can't one just go into the EDU and add 'general_unit' into every units abilities?

    I suppose you could do that. It would be an odd situation, though. And it would probably cause your family members to stop reproducing and end your family line.

    Wouldn't it just be like building [fudge]loads of mercenary generals? Does doing that stop your family reproducing?

    Mercenary generals are taken as family members when the game calculates the settlement to family member ratio for reproduction. For example, if you have ten towns, 5 family members, and twenty mercenary generals, your family members won't have children.
