Why does Sweden rock so much?

Musically-wise, that is.

It seems like every 10th good band I discover comes from Sweden. Dead Man, Witchcraft, Spiritual Beggars, On Parole and now one of the most kickass rock-and-roll bands I have EVER heard, The Itch (who, goddamnitalltohell, ARE NOT SIGNED! Why, god, why?!)

So, can anyone tell me: why does Sweden rock so damn much?!

The common explanation is that they are steeped in traditional folk songs.

SWEDEN?!??!?!??!?!?!??!?!??!!?

Bah! Talk to any death metal fan you wish, he can tell you that Sweden's next door neighbor Norway rocks much more - there's a reason our country is shaped like a guitar you know...

On a more serious note, I think it's due to the very generous government financing of music that we have... It makes it easier to make music without a record deal.
