Ok, so you are playing Rome: Total War and some of the in game units do not speak on the battle field, the example you've given is the Macedonian General's Bodyguard and the Sarmatian Infantry (Merc units with spears, those guys )?

Request mod move this thread to the R:TW sub forum.

    Welcome Mithick666,
Might I ask if you are using any modifications - if you are, it's possible that the mod may lack voices for these units. You may wish to inform the modding team of the mod you are using or try re-installing the mod (just run the executable again).

If not, this could be a problem with files not installing properly. You may wish to attempt re-installing. Doing this will lose your saved games, but there is a way of rescuing them

If you installed R:TW to the default location, then you need to navigate to either "C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War" should you have the Gold Edition or "C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War" should you have the standard non-Gold version. Non-English language versions of R:TW/Windows may result in different file paths, but the translation should be pretty much the same.

Once you are in, you should find a folder called "saves". Copy and paste it into your "My Documents" or, if your are using Vista "Documents" folder. Once you have done that, uninstall and re-install the game.

After you have completed that process, launch R:TW, start a campaign and then quit. This creates all the files that you need to finish the process.

Now, move the "saves" folder back into your R:TW directory. Once you've done that, your ready to play.

Hope this is useful, and don't worry about your English - we can understand fine

The Greek General used to shout "Somatophylakes Strategou!" all the time I selected him on .81. I didn't even notice when it disappeared but it did, so right now only occasionaly I hear them and mostly as the Ptolemaioi.

Bodyguard units take the assigned voice class in EDU in Custom Battles but when, iirc, attached to named charcters in-campaign they must also be copied into the General_1 voice class. You'll find that the Hellenistic Cavalry Generals' Bodyguard probably has its voice in CBs but not in campaign. It needs copying into the General_1 class for that culture in EDSUV.

The mercs also require being copied as they are used by many factions; the EB team have probably just missed an entry or entries somewhere for mercs.

    EDSUV

    EB/data/export_descr_sounds_units_voice.txt

    For example:

    Code:
      unit hellenistic cavalry generals bodyguard
              event maxdist 140
              folder eb/data/sounds/Greek/units
              somatophylakes_strategou.wav
              group
              end

has 1 instance in EDSUV, copy it below the General_1 on line (first instance) 2156 just after the lonchophoroi thus:

    Code:
       unit hellenistic general lonchophoroi
             event maxdist 140
             folder eb/data/sounds/Greek/units
             somatophylakes_strategou.wav
             group
             end
             unit hellenistic cavalry generals bodyguard
             event maxdist 140
             folder eb/data/sounds/Greek/units
             somatophylakes_strategou.wav
             group
             end
If you want to see how mercs and BGs should be coded then take a look at the FATW EDSUV for the principles of universal coverage of sounds both in CBs and campaign, with both mercs (and levies) and BGs. However, please note that EB and FATW may use classes in different ways and that I am not familiar with the EB coding in every particular.

Note: this advice is not official and not officially supported by the EB Team. Back up your files before modding. Make sure you know what you are doing. Do not mod your files and then report errors to EB unless you return the files to their original state first.

    Apologies for poor formatting above.
