Default accomplished lasting peace (for a price).

Just wanted to get a take on your strategies for keeping the peace with neighbors who don't want to play nice.

I have found quite a bit of success engaging in proxy wars! They have kept Roma's borders with the Dacians and Gauls quiet for almost 10 years now (with no activity from the Dacians and very few skirmishes with the Gauls). I'll admit that it is an expensive tactic but works if employed effectively. To do it, you have to simply use diplomacy to pay one of your enemies to attack their neighboring enemy. Even if they are at war already (Adeui and Averni or Eperios and the Dacians/Macedonians for example) it still works because it keeps the AI will remain too preocupied to attack you, and will not engage in those one-turn ceasefires it likes to do with its neighbors.

Most importantly, think of it as paying somebody to go to war for you, so don't use token gestures! I've been paying tens of thousands of mnai/turn to the Adeui to fight the Averni and the Germans every turn (at one point: 40-60k/turn, but that's pocket change for the polybian-era Roman Republic). Also, I play on M/M to ensure that diplomacy actually has a chance to work (so long as I have to loot). Its a costly measure, but it creates sort of a game within itself, without having to resort to forced diplomacy either.

    that's my tactic, what's yours?

40-60kMinai? ridiculously high, especially in the Polybian era....
I usually get the attack aggrement at 25kMinai... (on Hard Campaign...) but if you play them on VHard, that's ok...

I just got Polybian reforms and I have 1,000,000 mnai already. The selfish family members are going crazy, and I can certainly afford to pay people to fight my wars. It feels like I'm Britain in the 18th century

Cool store, bro! I want some ham.
    No ham, pepsi.
They make deli slices of frozen pepsi now? Awesome!
You also need to purchase a small freezer for storage of your pepsi.
It runs on batteries. You'll need a few.
Uhh, I guess I won't have pepsi then. Do you have change for a twenty?

Default AW: accomplished lasting peace (for a price).

Proxy wars seldomly work in my experience. I have once paid the Sabaeans 221,000 M to attack the Ptolemaioi. They made it truth only by chance years later when Ptolemaic Kush rebelled to them - totally wasted money. Five years later I paid the AS 30,000 M for Galatia, only to be betrayed by them the very next turn and have the Sabaeans stick up with them. On the other hand paying Armenia 120.000 M to go to war with the AS worked, they kept them busy and even gained Phraaspa for quite some time.

Peace and war are random things in the world of RTW.

Or start spamming Elephants and try to move them from Alexandreia to India and back to Alexandreia while attacking anything except settlements with stone walls. That's what I did in my Romani campaign. I actually reached India but my last 6 elephants were kill by a few Eleutheroi Dahae Skirmishers somewhere between Kophen and Bactria.

The first round of the tournament has started. Who's going to prevail?

Gladius or Sarissa, Scutum or Aspis?
