Some of the reviews/previews mention field fortifications like entrenchments. There are several types of forts mentioned also. The physics model will account for every projectile and real line of sight. If troops are behind something it will cover the exposed area making them hard to hit.

But I also understand that splinters and spolling is modeled, so if they are taking cannon fire or air bursting shell the cover is not going to be so effective.
