The Maratha Empire or Confederacy was born in violence, as the result of the successful overthrow of Mughal rule less than a generation ago. Raja (king) Shivaji managed to gain control of the Pune region, and from then Mughal power was no longer invincible. As might be expected, the Mughals and the Marathas still nurse a dislike for each other.\n\nUnlike the foreign (in origin) Mughals, the Maratha rulers are Indian princes and kings. They know the value of the Indian way of doing things, of the age-old strength of their lands. Their armies may look old fashioned, possibly quaint, to foreign eyes but that makes them no less effective. The empire exists solely because it has the military strength to withstand the Mughal threat.

Perhaps now, though, it is time to think of expansion. It may no longer be enough to hold off the Mughals; perhaps they should be driven from India altogether, and a new empire with Indian rulers established. Perhaps only Indians truly have the ability to withstand the Europeans who are starting to demand much of India. For now, the Europeans want only money and trade, but soon they will be after concessions, a little piece of land here, another piece there, until all is ruled by foreigners from across the sea. Unless a strong hand guides India, it is possible that the rule of Mughal outsiders will be replaced by the lordship of European outsiders.

And perhaps, one day, a Maratha could demand concessions from a European, in his lands…

I don't understand how it can possibly be the US. You'll have to start off in the middle of the campaign or something, and they won't even exist when you play as Britain

I don't think it's the US either, its an emergent faction. It's like trying to start the game with Republican France, it's not going to happen unless you trigger the right events, otherwise you'll stay monarchy from begining to end.

A recent IGN article said there are 11 factions and then the US in the RtI being the 12th.

I hope the US doesn’t take up the slot. Portugal with unassailable overseas possessions in Brazil, and Africa along with Goa seems good. Also Denmark with three provinces, Venice may have the same, and the Iroquois.

I have doubts about the Iroquois and Venice was very weak at the time. Of the two remaining Portugal would be my favorite but I don’t think Denmark can be ruled out.

Atleast Venice could compete on an even footing with other nations in terms of sea power. The Iroquois xcertainly couldn't, without a lot of research or tech stealing first.

Portugal makes the most sense, given its Imperial history, overseas colonies and strong naval tradition.

I'd like another "exotic" faction : Mughals or some Native indian faction.
I'd love to conquer europe with such factions (even if i'll be able to do it with Marahata.
I'm pretty sure such a campaign may be very interesting :)

There are mods for that. . The Mughal won't be in, CA have stated only one of the three Indian factions will be playable.

The Mughals wll be in, they're even mentioned as an enemy in the Marathas "description". It was near its height at the 1700 start date. CA May have stated only 3 are playable BUT technically the Mughals aren't Indian, they just have land in India.

This may have been answered elsewhere, but this sentence made me wonder: "And perhaps, one day, a Maratha could demand concessions from a European, in his lands… ". Could it be that a skillfully managed Marathas can do research and tech up to the level of the European factions?

Man nothing against the US but this time period would be horrible to play as them. They weren't a super power and could have easily have been destroyed if anyone wanted to destroy them. England have many times more soldiers then the US had people so if they wanted to(propably wasn't enough money making in it for England) they could have anahaleted them. They weren't always a super power. Also they would start half way through the game. IMO an indian or denmark or portugal would be much more interesting and more realistic.

I think that's the idea yes. All of the 12 playable factions will be able to reach a similar level of technology.

I know they are in the game I just meant that they aren't going to be one of the 12, now that the Maratha have been confirmed.

Maratha: Playable

Mysore: Not playable
Mughal: Not playable.

I don't see why not. I mean if they heavily invested in tech and stole other tech they could become number 1. It is a game.

Also consider it was said that after you finish the revolution campaign as the US, the US will be unlocked in the grand campaign as well, so they are not unplayable there which I think is great.
I still hope Portugal will be the 12th playable faction though, with the US an unlockable 13th.

The 12 playable factions will be a lot more fleshed out than the others, with more units, unique voices acting and other improvements. So I'd like to see Portugal get that sort of fleshed-out treatment.

Like you say though, it doesn't matter too much because mods and things can hopefully sort out problems.

I'm glad to see it's not only European factions that are playable. Marathas would be Hindu in Empire's timeframe I suppose, or would the rulers be Muslim like the Mughals?

Anyway, I doubt the US will be the twelfth faction, since they won't be there at the start. Either CA counted them as the 12th faction because you can play them in RTI, or it will be another faction you can play as (hopefully native American).

Hindu, which is prob why they are chosen over the mughals, other than mughal decline.

I don't think there are anymore factions that will bring anything new into it now. The 12th will be US or it will be something surprising...like Safavids or Indians!!!! or maybe a German state.

At the TWC, some has hacked the demo game files somehow, and the mughals have information on them, as do the other 11 confirmed, i think its the mughals
