Thread: [RTW EB + MTW XL] Lusitanian - From 271 BC to 1453 AD

Post [RTW EB + MTW XL] Lusitanian - From 271 BC to 1453 AD

This is a humorous but organized AAR mostly based on dialogue. It will be played in both RTW EB and MTW XL on the difficulties VH/VH and Expert. The only cheats I'll be using are visibility ones for both games (toggle_fow and .matteosartori.). I hope you enjoy it!

    Introduction (MTW)

What are we going to do!? The Moors control the South! To the East there's Leon and Castile!

    Yes.

Soon enough Portugal will be no more! We are midgets compared to our neighbours!

    You are, my King.

    You?

    "We"! I said "We"!

I have searched my father's library looking for answers.

Sadly I only found unholy books of depravity and carnal desires. The cover of this one seemed quite inviting. Read it to me, Peres!

    In a minute, sir.

In a minute the Moors will be invading Lisbon! Read it now, Peres Correia!

    Alright, alright, I'm reading it.

This is your past and your mirror.

In 271 BC the Chieftain of the Lusotannan, Tantalos Lusotanakum, called upon the warriors of the tribes to expel the invaders from his land...

We will conquer all until the horizon! And when we get there, we will see a new horizon and then conquer all until that one!

Yes! And all of the island will sing songs about us!

    ...

    What?

    The ISLAND?

    Yes! The Island of Iberia!

At least you can swing a sword, my son.

The Chieftain's first target was Gader, to the south. His son was to conquer Mastia, another Phoenician colony to the East.

Gader was conquered, but its air did not satisfy the Chieftain's lungs. He died of an illness soon after. His son, sieging Mastia, became Chieftain.

Gader has fallen and your city is next! Surrender!

That's impossible! The warrior Aqhat was defending Gader, you couldn't have defeated him!

    They didn't!

Aqhat! What are you doing here?

I switched sides before they could defeat me!

I can totally relate with this guy.

    That's written in there?

No, I... I was just making a comment.

    Keep reading, Peres!

After the conquest of Mastia, Latronos sent his men to conquer Arsé.

The voice of those singing our deeds will echo through a thousand years!

    Did you hear something?

    No, my King.

At this point, Chieftain Latronos was in great debt.

Hah! I can totally relate with this guy!

Will you let me read it?

Chieftain Latronos then disbanded all the army except for a small garrison force. The next years were of hard work to pay the debts of his father's military campaign. But the campaign had been successful and soon the Lusotannan warriors would march again.

These songs speak of a past so glorious that I wonder how we ended up so frail!

    Indeed, my King...

Are you joining us or not, Peres Correia?

Raise those gold coins to 30 and we're set.

But then again you didn't read it to the end. It might say what defeated the mighty Lusotannan!

No, no, I want to be titled Great King of Cordoba, no less!

Peres, who are you talking to?

Ahem... certainly not the Moors, your majesty.

Good! Because I don't want you talking with our enemy!

    Your enemy?

I declare war on the Moors! We will expel them from the Island of Iberia like Latronos did with the Carthaginians!

    I agree!

This was such a clever way to approach an AAR. I love the comic value of the prince and the king's exchanges.

(Thanks for the comments and sorry about the lack of updates. With my recent disappointment with ETW I feel like going back to the good Total Wars. Expect more updates soon!)

Please withdraw your war declaration, my King. If we pay a reasonable sum to the Moors they may forget your offense.

Forget!? I'll make sure they never forget our offense! They'll descend to hell with our offense in mind! They'll call upon the Devil to smite us with great fury, but God will aid our kingdom in the war against the demon worshippers!

Sounds like you have it all figured out.

Up until I sit on a golden throne in to the left of the Almighty in the Heavens.

But say, Peres, should we invade Algarve do the South or Cordoba to the East?

You planned sitting on a golden throne next to God but not where you will attack your enemy?

Our enemy and yes. Such inglorious decisions are more suited for inglorious men like you!

    ...

    Decide, Peres Correia!

Very well! I know the perfect man to lead our men.

Well thank you my King, but...

Not you, Peres Correia! It's my son, Henrique!

Aye father! I can lead the army with the help of Peres Correia's brother!

His broth... oh, nevermind. March on, my son!

The enemy fled before the fight! What happened?

The sand ate them! Then we flew to the Pyramids of Cordoba!

I believe your son needs some rest, Majesty.

    And who are you!?

I'm Lord da Maia. The Almoravids had imprisoned me in Cordoba for years. I was a great Portuguese commander and now I'm at your disposal.

You heard that, Peres? This man can actually do something, unlike you!

    Excuse me, father?

    Princess Mécia! You look b-beaut-t-ti-

This is your daughter, my King? Honored to meet you, young lady. You are more beautiful...

    Yes!

...than all the flowers by the Tejo!

Too much talk and too little action! Algarve shall be ours!

To the Sphynx of Algarve! All aboard the pink ships!

My King, could you do me a favor? My brother recently lost his lands due to a peasant rebellion...

    It's true.

So you do have a brother!?

Yes, and could he please become the Duke of Algarve?

Fine, Peres. Since I'm at it, why don't you marry my daughter?

Good one, my King. Sorry for asking.

No, no, I'm serious! Go ahead!

Thank you my King! I will forever honor your family! Long live Portugal!

I am the great da Maia! Follow me in my conquests!

    In Granada!

    And Murcia!

We have succeeded! Like the Lusotannan before us, we have conquered the South of Iberia and expelled our enemies!

I know you're busy celebrating, my King, but...

Spain has declared war on us.

You're such a joker Peres Correia! Now come drink with me!

    It's true, father.

    Oh...

Do not worry, my King, I will lead your armies to victory!

Your help will be needed, da Maia, but we must first seek advice. It's time to open the book again, Peres.

    My advice isn't good enough?

You're only my advisor because you can read, Peres. Go ahead!

The Lusotannan then waited. Chieftain Latronos consolidated what they had gained from the war. New lands, new people.

For 20 years they worked in the farms. In 20 months they built mines to sell metal and make weapons. In 20 weeks the men were recruited, armed.

And we have 20 minutes to defend ourselves from Spain!

Don't worry, father, if we focus our armies on Cordoba and Murcia we can defeat the Spanish.

This is what I'm talking about, Peres! Even my daughter gives better advice than you!

    I'll just continue reading...

Bored and wealthy, the Lusotannan men developed the bad habit of drinking. A lot.

But war approached once again, and it was up for Ditalkos, brother of Latronos, to gather a new army in the capital, Oxtraca.

Continuing the recruitment! Hic! I'm looking for healthy man who--

Wait! What are you doing here, Lukinos? Shouldn't you be governing Gader?

Ditalkos, this IS Gader, not Oxtraca.

Oh. I must've walked a long way the last night.

But aren't we recruiting in Tolosa?

    Tolosa isn't even ours!

I bring news from Tolosa! The Baktrians have invaded! But the population formed a human wall around the city by holding each other's hands, which comoted the Baktrians soldiers, who turned to walk home only to be stabbed by the population's hidden knives!

Amazing! You are certainly a great spy, Retokenes.

I went through oh so many perils to bring you such accurate information!

You haven't left the tavern of Sucum-Murgi in decades, have you?

No. But I'm confessing this just because Ditalkos is drunk and won't remember it.

    Hic!

Eventually the army was ready to march, and so it did. The village of Sucum-Murgi was the first target.

You better watch out, Ditalkos! The Phoenicians in there have african alephants and spears made of pure gold! Their general was a pupil of Alexandros of Makedonia!

How dangerous! We must be careful, but victory is certain if we have courage and lots of this fine Phoenician wine! Hic!

He may have been wrong about the elephants and spears, but the general really learned from Alexandros!

The Lusotannan entered Sucum-Murgi, but were outnumbered and retreated.

Well, at least we killed their Alexandric general.

He lives again! I saw it with my own eyes! The man had 3 lives, one was taken by the Baktrians in Tolosa and one by your sword, but one remains!

That's just not true, Retokenes. I have now conquered Sucum-Murgi and there was no trace of the general. But no matter...

...our supply of wine has arrived!

    Images fixed!

Baikor is where we march next.

Do not worry, Ditalkos! The city of Baikor is completely empty, we'll just march over it!

Have you really gone there, Retokenes?

Well, the guards at the gates didn't let me in but I did peek over the walls by jumping around.

    Really?

No, I honsetly just held my monkey up and told him to take a look inside the walls. But it's totally safe, I guarantee!

Ah, no matter. Arebasiko, my son! You'll command the siege of Baikor!

Me? But father, I wanted to manage the... affairs and look after the... administration.

Manage the booze and look after the wine? Fine, I'll go. But you'll have to govern Sucum-Murgi.

    I'll... govern it!

What a fine army Oxtraca sent us. Even if Baikor is heavily defended we won't have much trouble conquering it.

Still it was wise to hire some slingers for ranged strength!

RETOKENES!! Where is the empty city you promised?

It will be empty once our armies led by your astounding commanding skill destroys the enemy, great general!

Another defeat... but again we killed their general, and if history repeats itself, we will conquer Baikor in our next attempt.

Arebasiko, my son, I have returned!

Ditalkos! I bring news from Baikor!

I'm sure you do, Retokenes the liar, but I'm not interested.

But Ditalkos! The armies of Baikor left the city and march to Sucum-Murgi to attack us!

Sure they march, Retokenes. Tell me, how many elephants do they have with them? Let me guess, Alexander himself commands the army?

No, no! Believe me, future Chieftain! There won't be a next attempt to siege Baikor, they are coming for us!

Quiet now, useless spy! Son, give me that beer!

Ditalkos, the men of Baikor are preparing an ambush!

Arebasiko, did you hear an annoying deceitful spy say something? I know I didn't.

I would have father but I'm too drunk!

Ditalkos you have to believe me!

Alright, I'm tired of you. We'll march to Baikor and siege it again, and I'll rightfully kill you for your incompetence because their army will still be in the city, not preparing some non-existing ambush.

    AMBUSH!

You'll live for now, spy. But if you do any more of that witchery, I'll have you killed.

    Witchery?

Oh yes! You called me the "future Chieftain" and my father died soon after! I forbid you to perform such wizardry again!

Retokenes! We need to speak some time.

Don't even consider that, son. You aren't even my heir. You'll have to show a lot more than just drinking abilities to become the leader of the Lusotannan.

Looks like we have no choice. Like the Lusotannan we must go to war.

I only wish my son's problem was as simple as drinking. What will happen to my kingdom after I die?

Do not worry, my King. Princess Mécia and I will aid and advise your son.

Thank you, Peres... You are a good and loyal advisor. I hope that will be enough.

You two should go to Cordoba and handle the central frontier, I'll take care of Portucale.

Is there a palace in Cordoba?

    Are there dressmakers in Cordoba?

    ...Sure! Just go now.

We are being attacked from the rear! Almoravid troops landed in defenseless Granada!

I'll send them back to where they came from.

But Da Maia! Then our border with Spain will be defenseless!

They haven't attacked for three years after declaring the war, I think they can wait.

    Men! Turn around! Now march!

Where is Lord Da Maia telling us to "follow him in his conquests" and all that babbling?

Da Maia hasn't returned from Granada. The Almoravids seem to be invading constantly from the South. Why?

Your father is in danger, Spain invaded Portucale. He requested Da Maia, but now we can only send men and hope they get there.

    We must get Da Maia!

Impossible. There's no time for him to get there.

Well then... you go! Lead the men! Rescue your King!

I'm just an advisor, Mécia. I don't go to war.

This is war! We are in the war already! How can you be so cowardly!?

I bring news from the eastern front! El Cid has invaded Murcia!

Please tell me your name is Retokenes. Does El Cid have elephants too, Retokenes?

I, no, no. My name is Gil. Who's Retokenes?

    Oh, so this is serious...

Say, Gil, do you have any experience in war?

No, my Lord, I'm just an--

Excellent! You will lead the armies to Portucale to rescue your King!

    But my Lord, I said I don't--

Don't be so cowardly! Go now, glory awaits!

I bring news from Portucale. We succeeded in expelling the Spanish, but the King...

    What? What about the King?

    No! Father!

    God, help us.

There must be a way! We can't give up!

I just don't see a way as long as that crazy King sits on the throne.

That's my brother and he has nothing to do with this! We are the ones on power, this is all our fault!

Fine, but what do you want me to say? Now that Da Maia abandones us, who will lead our armies? We're bound to lose this war if we continue.

Are you saying we can sign a peace treaty?

We could, although an unfavorable one. We could offer Cordoba and Algarve to the Spanish and...

In the name of the Sphynx of Algarve and the Pyramids of Cordoba, are you insane, Peres Correia!?

With all due respect, King Henrique II, you're the one who's crazy here.

I will not allow the Spanish to tear apart my kingdom!

    The Luso-Egyptian kingdom shall stand!

Brother! You have done it! You defeated the Spanish and kept our kingdom alive!

Three birds flew over the Nile into the Mediterranean! Warn the sailors!

Well, I guess our luck is over. Now that the danger is gone, "Pharaoh" Henrique II went back to being the usual lunatic.

Not at all, Peres. While you look at what's obvious he looks beyond! The sea is the future of our kingdom! He wants us to invest in overseas trade!

We must call upon the Courts.

The Good Men of the Kingdom need to be communicated of our plan.

Oh? We could call all men of the Kingdom! And all women too!

Everyone could vote for the destiny of the Kingdom! Peasants, clergy and noblemen together!

    Hahahaha...

    Hahaha!

...haha. Oh, darling, peasants are devilish creatures, they can have no say.

We are calling the Good Men! Those favoured by God, to whom He gave the right to exploit the work of peasants--

Creatures from Hell! They rebelled in my brother's property a few years ago!

How unpleasant! These wretched people don't understand how hard we work just to keep them alive.

Indeed! If we say that carrying us in our stone thrones to Portucale is important, then it certainly is!

And what's so hard about lifting us in these thrones? I'm quite light!

Noblemen of the Courts! We are here united under Henrique II, King of Portugal, Algarve, Cordoba, ...

    Zzz...

And leader of the nations of Portugal, Algarve, Cordoba, ...

    Zzz...

Can't you just say the nation of Portugal? We've united the peninsula, it's just one nation now.

Iberia one nation? Hah! You're such a fool Peres!

    ...

Wait! Good Men, our meeting isn't over!

    ...

Noblemen, we have all journeyed great distances in this year of 1114!

Today we must unite in an effort to consolidate a way...

    To make money!

My first suggestion is that we build churches to stop those pesky priests from draining our treasures!

That way we can rent the churches and the gold they loot from the peasants will be redirected to us!

    Rent churches? Blasphemy!

Peres, many of the nobles in here are members of the clergy...

Our great king, Henrique II, has ordered all of his vassals to engage in naval trade.

In other words, you all must build ships!

Now, how many of you have sailed?

    ...

Alright. How many of you have seen a ship?

    ...

How many of you know what a ship is?

    ...

That's fine! My King, we must hire a foreign man knowledgeable in the arts of seafaring.

    I suggest a Swiss!

Oh yes, we could hire a Swiss sailor!

Indeed, that was a good pick, Peres.

You fools! Switzerland doesn't have any sea exits! We need a Venetian boy!

His sparks of lucidity never cease to amaze me.

That is fine too! We'll bring a Swiss--

    VENETIAN!

That's what I said! A Venetian sailor should work wonders for our purposes!

The southern tribes united under Ditalkos gathered their men in Arsé to invade the north. These men would be commanded by Arebasiko, the son of the Chieftain. Retokenes, the spy, accompanied him.

Retokenes! What are you doing here in Arsé? Shouldn't you be scouting for my son in the north?

Oh, of course, I was! But your son was doing so well that I came back!

Really? How did he do in Numantia?

Conquered it alone, all by himself, if I remember right! He marched in with a sword in his right hand, a shield in the left and left the city with gold in his right and a woman on his left!

That's my boy! I can't imagine what I would do if this expedition was a failure. Well, I guess we could always gather the tribes again and send my son to have another go!

    1 day later...

We are here at the execution of the spy Retokenes, who, failing to perform his duties, led to the death of Chieftain Ditalkos's son and the defeat of the northern expedition. Retokenes was also known for misinforming the Losutannan warriors in several occasions, and so is proved to be in fact a northern spy, enemy of Lusotana.

Why do we need all this ceremony? Why not just cut his head off already?

Since we conquered the Phoenician colonies the people have been demanding trials. It's the institutionalization of the legal system! They say it is civilized.

Civilized? To hell with civilization! I'll cut his head off myself!

Hah! Spirits of the forest, I summon you! Bandue, bandua, bandui banda!

    What!? He's gone!

I knew Retokenes was involved with witchery! I will find you, Retokenes! My descendents will chase you until the end of the world to cut your head off! My son will be avenged!

Romance of Lusitania - Part 3 (MTW)

Peres, why are you reading that book? It's not going to help us in our naval enterprises. I doubt the Lusotannans ever built a ship.

You're pragmatic, I admire that. But History contains examples that can benefit our people. King Henrique, God rest his soul, knew that. His son, on the other hand, thinks he is Pharaoh of Egypt.

No! You stupid slaves! It has to look like a triangle!

They are your serfs, majesty. Serfs.

    Shut it Cleopatra!

Good thing my time is almost up. Soon I'll meet Christ and his sake in person. I'll serve my true King Henrique in heaven, not this crazed moron.

    The Venetian has arrived!

    ...

    Say something, Venetian!

    ...

What is he trying to say?

Ah! His tongue was cut by Genoese sailors!

    See? We understand each other!

Go on, then! Sail to Flanders!

    And Genoa!

    And Egypt!

Oh, that's right. We are already in Egypt.

    Last Chapter (MTW and RTW)

The plans of maritime expansion went well under the Venetian for almost a decade, until the Holy Roman Emperor became interested in allying Portug-- The Luso-Egyptian Kingdom.

For the Venetian's bad luck, the Empire was at war with Venice and judged him a spy.

Peres never finished reading the book. He died. But many years after he stopped reading - the book had gotten boring.

Peres and King Henrique met again in the cloudy kingdom of Heaven.

However, God told them that only one of the two could enter Paradise, due to their war against fellow christians - the Castillians.

Peres was quick to betray his King, as usual, and pushed Henrique into Hell. But when Peres was about to enter Heaven, someone pushed him into Hell and entered in his place. Who could this man be, who is even more disloyal than Peres?

    Here comes Aqhat the Turncoat!

King Henrique did not achieve his dream of sitting in a golden throne in the Heavens. Instead, his punishment in Hell was to be eternally advised by Peres.

God did not see this - He was busy smiting witches, who claimed to be descendants of an ancient pagan called Retokenes.

Chieftain Ditalkos hunted down the spy Retokenes in an epic journey, involving Baktrians in Tolosa, spears of pure gold, alexandric generals and much, much wine.

    Hic!

Ditalkos did manage to cut off the head of Retokenes the liar, who had caused the death of his son, but the head uttered words of witchery and disappeared.

    Bandue, bandua, bandui banda!

Back to the future, Princess Mécia inherited the Duchy of Algarve from her husband, Peres Correia. She then married Lord da Maia and had a son. They named him Peres.

Lord da Maia was imprisoned in Cordoba once again, after the return of the Almoravids, who took advantage of the King's madness.

Without the advices of Peres and the maritime skills of the Venetian, King Henrique II saw his Luso-Egyptian Kingdom fall to the betrayers of the Holy Roman Empire, who supported the great peasant rebellion of Raimundo Peres Correia. King Henrique II managed to escape in one of the merchant Portuguese ships. He ended up in the port of Alexandria.

But this isn't in some old History book. This is not your past. This is not your mirror.

    Unless you read it right.
