People just don't learn.
cambovenzi 11:47 02-25-2009
well i have another suggestion:
a specific sub-forum to list people that are banned.
on another forum i have been on for a while, they have something called "the village of the banned".
a separate subforum where the mods can post threads on banned users, and post for how long, and why they got banned.
this way it doesnt get mixed into everything else.
people can easily see if and why they were banned, and it doesnt get into the way of anything else.
Hello cambovenzi,
I don't really like to ban accounts, but when people refuse to play nice and insist on that, I will. A gallowhill isn't really nice, neither is quietly shoving it under the carpet. The former isn't because this board is not about banning people, nor putting a spotlight on it. The latter isn't because at times people think or feel they should be banned and that coinciding with a problem with their account, so they are just another silent victim. Then either the outcry is that I banned someone while I didn't or the person gets hurt and gets the idea that I am a cruel bully who kicks everyone for having a less good hairday. That last thing already happens. Posting a small topic in the Watchtower seems to be a good middleway.
The forums are to have a good time together, not to laugh at each other (mock, insult, ridicule) or to live in 'fear'.
The Watchtower doesn't have the high turnover that it actually blocks the flow of the river when I post this topic. However, you are very correct in your statement that the disruption by a few hamper the fun of all others. But in all cases of bans, that has been going on through other forums on this board. In some cases for years, while we tried to gently and less gently correct that behavior.

But why did he get banned?
I think it's because he didn't want to join my mini mafia /shameless advertising

first time I've seen a thread dedicated to some one because they've been banned?
Who is this guy anyway? What did he do wrong?

It's always announced in this forum tibilicus. There might be exceptions where it was said in the thread itself (other forum).

That's something between the staff and Gaius Terrentius Varro. It will not be discussed here unless Gaius Terrentius Varo chooses to make it public.
There is a couple of threads here notifying the forum that someone has been banned, but it's a pretty rare event. The vast majority of bans concern spambots, and we don't feel it's necessary to put up a notification of that.

OK most inappropriate place to say this: But that's at least 50 points towards Senior Membership.
Sort of a cosmic yin-yang.

You know, I would imagine bans don't happen that often. Do they?
Some of us, myself included, sometimes tread the line and get upset... but most people can be rehabilitated I think.
I just wonder what must someone do to get banned, and why would they expend the energy doing so? Isn't it a waste of time and thought?
Try as I might, I will never understand why people behave the way they do. And that's in general, not directed at anyone, banned or not.

Bans are a rarity.

A forum is not really the place for rehabilitation. When a member registers here they accept the terms and conditions. If someone feels that they cannot abide by these, then it's obvious as to what they must do (decline).

For the ban in question:

Though In general: Persistently breaking the
rules.

I think perhaps that some people see an internet forum as a medium from which to launch anonymous personal attacks against people they've never met, post bad language and in general behave disrespectfully towards other patrons. Remember that there is a person behind every post/profile. Treat others as you would have them treat yourself.

OMG!
I finally read the rules (thank you for the link
Asai Nagamasa)
I never realized just how tightly regulated we are

Be nice? Don't make it personal? No commercial skulduggery?
No wonder there's maybe one (more or less) banned every year!

Compared to some other forums I visit, the Org is tame and judiciously run with grace and tact. At the Taleworlds forum for example (the original, non-Paradox-affiliated Mount and Blade forum), staff declare openly that patrons have no rights, no "free speech," no nothing--it's a privilege to post there, and they tolerate your presence. Temporary mutings and bans, permanent bans, and IP bans for those who are caught returning under an alternate account after being banned, are frequent. Despite the intolerant, iron-fisted, ban hammer-wielding staff, the forum is a lot more unruly and obnoxious than the Org is or ever was since I've been here. The Org seems to do a good job promoting the desired general behavior, based on the temperament of its average patron.

This is the best-run forum I've ever come across. Any issues or warnings regarding my account were dealt with swiftly and in the fairest manner I've seen, and no one here is overly-punitive I think. Plus the really bad members did get banned. I remember I had (for all intents and purposes) a stalker that was banned.
The few times, the very few times, I thought someone deserved to be banned, they were. I consider myself a pretty reasonable guy most of the time, and hasty punishments don't happen here. I also like how the problems get resolved if someone does have an issue with the staff or a moderator.
I haven't spoken to TosaInu that much, or many of the moderators here, but every time I have, I felt like I was being treated like a human being.
That's my feedback on Org policy, banning, and the staff here. I thought you guys might like the positive feedback. I think this post was mostly on-topic, but I'll end it here before I knock the thread off-topic.

to this forum and its people.

Well, since someone already made the crack about Cannae, perhaps I will make my own lame attempt:
It's discrimination. Varro was a plebeian. Looks like Lex Hortensia has not reached .Org...
Onto the Aventine, men! Let's hold a strike!!

Whoa! A new name on the proscription list? Is he forever gone?? That is sad, what did he do? I actually knew him, and he seemed like a normal "old-timer" to me.

Thanks for such a quick response, but I already found it myself, just a minute ago. I looked into the BacroomWT, and the two threads there explained it all. Thanks anyway
Yeah, I need to investigate more before posting next time...

Deus vult.
I've gotten to know desert somewhat, and was surprised to hear of what he did. Let him be struck from the records.
I was shocked as well.

What did he do?

Shocking and sad to see what happened to desert. He was one of the few readers whom actually posted in my AAR so it is sad.

Why cant some ppl learn that if you dont like what is said in one thread just move on to another cuz there has to be like what 8342876517265652527353875623076423874 threads on the interwebs?

You do realise how serious what he was banned for was, right? Just what a vile and flagrant breach of site policy it was, right?

Judging by his response, I honestly don't think he does.
