The formation button is the only way to fight the naval buttons. I haven't lost since i started using it, I hadn't won at all before finding it

Agreed. It's also helpful not to use broadsides, they very rarely do more damage than normal fire as they are decidedly innacurate.

Micro-management seems to harm your chances of winning in a naval battle.
