I tend to use mercs as cannon fodder. Always when I take a city I hire some mercs to climb the walls and breach the openings etc. I care about my factional units too much and don't want them to get hurt!

The first round of the tournament has started. Who's going to prevail?

Gladius or Sarissa, Scutum or Aspis?

I always leave at least 2 slots open for mercs, generally the Galatikoi Kluddon, they're pretty much everywhere and they do a lot of damage. Perfect against light and most medium infantry, great flankers too.

In my Carthage game I had to raid Egypt to slow the Ptolomies stack spam at Lepki for a decade or two. Those guys proved extremely useful as flankers. Dropped like flies, but there were always plenty more.

My strategy is: Full factional army and half stack containing every type of unit used in core army, following every operating army to merge and reinforce it in case of casualties
