Default Do you use the new recruitment options?

I dont like it very much. Seems rather pointless to me, since, at least in the pre-patch version, the units queued up by a general didn't update their destination when an army moved.
    Kind of bleh

However, I LOVE the ability to reinforce in the field. I always hated having to micromanage my units in previous TW games to get decent lines, or else drag them back to the nearest city where I could recruit them for retraining. Could be a serious pain for elite units.

yes and no. Sometimes I'll park a general in the field and queue up some units, normally at the start of the game. But as my cities advance I like to have the control of creating so many infantry here, so many cavalry there, ect.

Plus I like to rename my units after the city so I like to control what city does what in that regard. Kiev is famous for its Dragoons in my latest game.

Only in forts. If they take a pounding I'll replenish them that way as I know that my army won't be moving any time soon.
My view is that it is deserable to be both loved and feared; but it is difficult to achieve both and, if one of them has to be lacking, it is much safer to be feared than loved. - Niccolo Machiavelli

Good idea, not useful in practice for me.

I discovered something about this, after accidentally selecting a more advanced unit on his list:

The units that the general requested appear at the settlement closest to him that is capable of producing that unit. So, one reason a general's unit construction list is so much larger than that of any settlement is that he can recruit from (potentially) all settlements. And the "1/3" etc. numbers on the units he recruits give some feedback on this: the 1st number is the build time, the 2nd number is the travel time, in turns.

I agree it's a great convenience, but the other way seems more "realistic."

I also wonder why reinforcing naval units takes 1 turn (although, they have to stay in the port), while reinforcing land units takes 2 turns.

Maybe they just press-gang the poor suckers instead of actually "recruiting" reinforcements like army units have to. I seem to remember that military conscription wasn't introduced until post-revolutionary France, but impressment was rather common practice in the Royal Navy, at least.

It's nice in principle, particularly for the period, but fairly useless in practice. You so rarely want a line of single units stretched across half the campaign map making their own way to the invoking army that it's easy to forget it's even there.

Thumbs up Re: Do you use the new recruitment options?

I don't care much about the whole thing with the generals being able to recruit in the field, very pointless, might as well just manually recruit from the local barracks.

However, I agree that the retraining in the field is awesome! I can retrain my troops anywhere now! This is great for RP'ing purposes and easier for mods. As New Spain, I can train African Native Infantry as auxiliary units and send them off to America to partake in my wars, and not have to worry about shipping them back to Africa to retrain. Life is so much easier.

It has some uses though. For example, you can camp a general in a choke-point fort with some hastily gathered militia army and then make him form a 'proper army' himself while not worrying about manually managing new unit movements. I like this feature.

Retraining in the field is great though. The only problem I see with it: some 'reality freaks' will probably mod it out later; unfortunately, that most likely will happen in the best ETW mods that will come

I saw the recruitment as a way to model supply lines... unrealistic, but a move in a correct direction.
