I have a three year old Dell laptop with a 1.87 Ghz dual core processor, 2 gigs of RAM, and a 256 Mb video card. The game crashes whenever I try to fight a battle in the demo. What are the chances I'll be able to play the campaign in the real game?

The dual core is probably fine but I'd suspect your graphics card not being able to use the selected shader model. It is a LAPTOP GRAPHICS CARD and a low-mid end one from your laptop description.
