    Default Auto Calc

So now it's a few days till i'm getting game (Sounds familiar ) and thought i'd fire off some questions to those who have played/own the game.

I know lots of people are ooing and ahhing over the graphics, and that's cool. Probably means alot of hands on battles.

That said, has anyone tried the auto calc feature much? I like the battles and all, but usually after a month or two I start using auto calc more and more.

So does it work this time? Or is this back to killing your gothic knights rather then peasants in a 5:2 advantage?

Everything dies pretty much equally. If you take 200 losses during an autocalc battle and you have 1000 total units all your units will lose roughly 20% of their manpower.

Interesting to point out though is that in battles where you have a really huge advantage you usually suffer no losses whatsoever or at least extremely miniscule losses(like 5 men out of a 1500 strong army).

Almost reminds me of the castle seiges in MTW2 where somehow the AI could take the castle and only lose 1 or 2 guys.

Damn well as in 'as a cheat to take forts easily'
Or as in 'giving the defenders a decent defensive advantage'
maybe those guys should be doing something more useful...

I'm finding that I don't use auto-calc at all. I used to in the previous titles and I don't know if I stopped because the battles just got "more fun" or what.

Maybe you just have less battles but I recall in mtw2 that i'd have at times anywhere from 5-15 battles per turn, sometimes again less then 200 men, it just got ridiculous to always go to the battle.

Plus the horse archer issue didn't help much.

Auto-calc seems resonably fair this time around, although I have noticed the fact you get fewer and fewer losses the more you outnumber the enemy. Down to possibly unrealistic levels.

I play pretty casually, and the land battles arent a huge focus for me, so I tend to auto calc a lot. It seems a lot better done this time around. Every once in a while you get screwed over or decimate the enemy. i.e. I took Berlin with an ok army versus a large army. Very few losses.

The whole 'does damage to your entire army' thing isn't so bad this time around since you can replenish units in the field. I dont mind it so much now when I end up in a fight with 118 linesmen per unit, since I know I'll be making nice, even, lines in a couple of turns.
That was what I hated about MTW2, really. It was such a pain to organize your units into proper lines without doing it manually.

Auto-calc actually sometimes works more reasonably than fighting it on the battlemap. I'm sure it's because all those units are way too similar, but also maybe because I have a lot of artillery in my armies (I think it's auto-calc value must be quite high).
