Err, can Gentlemen do something else than being in universities? I've had 4 universities with two-three Gentlemen in each one for the duration of my campaign. I didn't find any other use for them.

They can fight duels with other gentlemen, possible killing one of them, or they can snoop around in foreign schools and steal tech.Originally Posted by Mister V
There's also a third option, where they just visit and don't do anything dangerous. I don't know what that does, though.

And I researched everything myself, and wondered why all those scholars kept coming to my universities...

You're probably better off. The odds of your gentlement getting caught and executed seem to large to justify the slower research.
