Weird thing guys, I have too many gentlemen for my own good. There are around 7 of them lying around with nothing to do, since they cannot duel well or steal well. Anyone else getting this? I have no rakes whatsoever.

I wish I had more Gentlemen. I have one, and three universities.

~ I LOVE DEMOS ~

I am sure loads of people would love to have that problem.
What types of entertainment building do you have? Isn’t that where Rakes come from?

and conceals from the stupid,
the vast limits of their knowledge.

I do have more gentleman then rakes, but this is also probably because I have a lot more schools then I have coah inns.
Also you can put your gentleman on your schools to increase the rate at which you discover new techs.
I have three pleasure gardens, I haven't spawned a rake since 1706 (I'm in 1718)
The gentlemen mostly have 3 research stars with no other abilities, and only 2 of them seem to have any effect on the research.

Put some in the Education Buildings of another faction. No telling what he may come away with. Of course, he may come away with a knife in the back.

Everytime a new research is done, they get traits to improve. Just stick your gentlemen into your schools, they do make a massive difference, especially if you had one since the beginning and doing the later researches, they took like 13 turns off of one of my researches.
Days since the Apocalypse began
"We are living in space-age times but there's too many of us thinking with stone-age minds" | How to spot a Humanist
"Men of Quality do not fear Equality." | "Belief doesn't change facts. Facts, if you are reasonable, should change your beliefs."
So this leads me to the question...why use the gentlemen for anything other than sticking them in your schools? Sure, sure if you REALLY want another factions tech I guess you could try and take it, but so far everything seems to point to the odds being stacked against you in those attempts.
I have tried to create duelists but it seems I win 1 duel out of 5 when the chances are 50%, and even given that "success rate?" I have never actually killed the opponent. Also increasing dueling skill requires that you increase both your sword AND pistol skill, so even if you are an amazing swordsman the opponent could just pick pistols and you're back to 50%.
I guess my real question is what have you guys done to try and train your gentlemen if anything? I suppose you can get lucky and have one with the right qualifications magically appear, but is there any other way?
Same thing applies to rakes. Since there don't appear to be as many agents running around as in previous TW titles, how do you level up their skill so they actually have better than a 50% of just infiltrating a building.
Cheer up 'Tis no use to be glum, Boys,
'Tis written since fighting begun,
That sometimes we fight and we conquer
And sometimes we fight and we run
I just stuck them in schools. If I needed an enemy character dead, my rake happens to be much more succesful with his 30% success rate rather than a gentleman's "50% chance."
I just stick them in the nearest School/Church School. By sticking Isaac Newton in Cambridge (or was it Oxford?), I reduced the time it took to research one technology from six to three turns. Although to be fair he did have a lot of 'stars'. I've never tried duelling with anyone yet.
At the end of the day politics is just trash compared to the Gospel.
Err, can Gentlemen do something else than being in universities? I've had 4 universities with two-three Gentlemen in each one for the duration of my campaign. I didn't find any other use for them.

Steal tech?!
And I researched everything myself, and wondered why all those scholars kept coming to my universities...
You're probably better off. The odds of your gentlement getting caught and executed seem to large to justify the slower research.
