Default New game - Stalin vs. Martians

Well, I just saw this trailer and I got this incredible urge to share it with you girls (and guys).

I wonder what this is all about, so far it looks rather rough around the edges. but it could develop into a great game, especially if all the cutscenes are like the trailer.

And people say the Japanese have a monopoly on insanely weird games!

Did I really see tanks shooting at a bunch of multi-coloured pinata which then explode into showers of candy? And evil giant dancing mushrooms?

Gah, I'm sorry, but the video just aggravated me. The dancing animation was just pathetic, and it depressed me. The game play seemed sub par too.

FAQ sounds interesting, I'm keeping an eye on this one

Any questions? The address is info@dreamloregames.com. Maybe we'll add your question to the list. Maybe not.

Vopros: Is that true that the game is developed by three studios?
Otvet: Yeah. Not one, not four, but exactly three. Its a long story why it happened this way and, what is important, you don't really need to know it.

Vopros: Stalin was a terrible tyrant with bloodstained hands. How can you make such a game around that?
Otvet: We can talk for hours about Stalin and all the controversies that surround him. We're Russians and we possibly know the subject better than you. But all this talk doesn't make any sense, you know, at all. Accept Stalin vs. Martians as a montypythonesque humor or get out.

Vopros: Can we play as Stalin himself?
Otvet: Yes, but not from the start. Stalin is our commander and he gives us orders. Closer to the grand finale he will appear on the battlefield as a playable unit - a huge colossus, five times higher than any other creature. Just like it was in the real life.

Vopros: Is that a late April Fool's Day joke?
Otvet: We used to make jokes not only at the first day of April, but all the time. We do understand that you can't understand how anything like Stalin vs. Martians can exist. But the game is real. It is in development, it will be released, you can buy it and drool on it for months. That's what makes the project THAT important. It is here and now, and it is absolutely unique.

Vopros: You say that Stalin vs. Martians is probably the best real-time strategy title of the year. Are you serious?
Otvet: C'mon, don't be so boring. Of course we're serious.

Vopros: I can see that some of the martian units resemble the characters from other games.
Otvet: It is no coincidence. Well, most of the time. Stalin vs. Martians is not only a kitsch (check Wikipedia for this word if you're from Iowa), but also a parody. Sort of.

    Vopros: What's your inspiration?
Otvet: Vodka, samovar, borscht and pirogi.

Vopros: If you were Stalin for one day, what would you do?
    Otvet: Your mom!

Vopros: I've heard from somewhere that this game is actually funded by KGB.
Otvet: If it was funded by KGB, we'd be millionaires without even releasing anything! That's how the government funding works in Russia.

    Vopros: Are you communists?
Otvet: Don't be stupid, all Russians are communists!

Vopros: How would you spend your money if the game is a tremendous commercial success?
Otvet: Well, like all the rich Russians do. First, we'd buy a property in London. We really like Kensington and Knightsbridge.
Vopros: Your game is basically like Red Alert 3. The same . What's the difference?
Otvet: Since our production budget is 1 zillion times lower than the budget of Red Alert 3, we think it is actually a compliment.

Right - it seems reincarnation holds true without a doubt - thats Oscar Wilde talking alright. Its worth buying the game just for the answers. Good find.

It's like Dawn of War meets Peggle.

    EDIT:

RPS: I actually found myself at a conference at the weekend. They were debating development in Russia and similar, and what sort of stuff people had done which was impressive. Someone noted… has anyone over there done a funny game? And everyone was stumped, until I mentioned Stalin Versus Martians. Do you think there’s a lack of funny Russian games? And if so, why?

Alexander: Putin personally throws funny Russian people into jail. That’s why Russians are mostly dull and their take on computer games is 100% serious like they’re creating a nuclear bomb or something. The dullest people are Russian publishers, who have no sense of humour at all and invest money in serious WWII titles, worn-out IPs and cheap adventure games. It is a very hopeless situation and I think that the Jews are involved somehow.

I thought it was a joke... Until I saw dancing Stalin.. And my jaw dropped.

I'm sure they'll be many Stalin haters bashing the hell out of the creators when the game comes out. But all the best for them as I know they made this knowing the consequences.

I'm not going to buy it but it looks like a decent game

Actually, in Russia, I'd be more worried by Stalin worshipers. They are still a lot of them, and they might not like seeing their Great Awesome Leader dancing in a video game.

As for the game itself, I'm sorry, but it looks like any bad videogame that tries to sell itself with a rather poor and pointless humour.

Its all down to personal preferences of course but imho the humor is great exactly because its bad and there was a want for this kind of thing in the genre - RTS conventions are really a parody in themselves in a way so its a great idea to formalise that.

I still laugh to tears with the sheer genious of cutscenes from Red Alert and how they parodied things in the midst of taking them seriously. In a sense i got a feeling that the developer parodies the RTS scene as a whole too, like the companies that make the same C and C warcraft 2 clone with different units since 1995.

As for judgements on the game itself its always best to retain them until you personally play it, at least as far as gameplay is concenred and not aesthetics/atmosphere.

I thought it was genius. Game looks rough though. Might be worth it for cutscenes though.

Epic dance there! Although the game is a tad rustic (not much variety in the Russian unit list it seems) perhaps the sequel will be: Robert Mugabe vs The Cyclons
    Now with transparent layers!

Hm. The idea was almost making me smile a little but the game just looks yawn! somehow. I mean, taking a very dated RTS engine and putting funny sprites and some outlandish story in...

Talking Re: New game - Stalin vs. Martians

Bah, this game merely perpetuates the stereotypes about Russians that not-so-educated Westerners posses. All Russians like communism? Bollocks. Everyone loves earning money. The only people in Russia that still like communism are the old pensioners who are too conservative too change.

Now, of course, this game is merely a parody of other RTS games, but still...

I like the "buying property in London" comment though. it is very much true. As is the fact that Russians oligarchs have a taste for purchasing obscenely expensive art without actually understanding a single bit about the art they buy.

It most certainly is. In fact, 'Uncle Joe' is a common nickname for the fellow.
