Legally they have no obligation to give you a refund unless the product is faulty, or was mislabelled. However it may be the case that they will offer you a refund as a courtesy.

The longer you wait the less chance there is that you'll get a refund.

Dogfish is right. If you take it back immediately with a receipt you have a good chance of a refund, If you wait too long they are unlikely to offer you one.

Not that I'd ever suggest such deviant behaviour, but the desk clerks in Tesco aren't likely to be the most tech-savvy of people. Could always try your hand at bluffing them that it -is- defective.

To be honest if you told them that it was they really aren't going to argue with you. So long as you have a receipt anyway.

And, really, taking the position that the game is defective doesn't currently require bluffing, because it's the truth.

Actually, they will never refund you.

They will only refund you if it is unopened and still in the plastic.

Why? because games, dvds and other computer media can be copied. So if the product is faulty, they will simply replace it with the same product. If you don't like the product, tough luck really.

    Sell/give it to a friend.

Obviously hes tried to run it, game tied to his steam account. He can sell, but they can't play.

The store (if they know anything) will not take it back.

All the stores here let you know that if you buy it, they can't take it back, due to online activation. It becomes a useless product.

My steam account only has this game on, I will just give it to the friend who I sold it too. Only reason I have steam is this game, so wouldn't affect me.

If they are happy with it, sure.

But I have other games on my steam account, as do many others...

    TF2, L4D, portal etc

Yeah, he is right. WalMart, for instance, will refund just about anything, no matter how ridiculous the request is. They will even refund a fully consumed bottle of Coke if you tell them you do not like it. However, one thing they will not do is refund games. Because, yes, you can copy them. And WalMart is in US, unlike the British Tesco.

Back in the day I used to constantly exchange games at Babbage's after I had copied them. I swear I had some receipts that were 2-3 pages long (about a dozen "exchanges") until I started to get a refund first and then immediately buy a new game so that it would have a clear receipt and I wouldn't get funny looks when I had my mom drive me back two days later to exchange it again. :) On the plus side, I did acquire some pretty good assembly and hex editing skills for a 12-year old to get rid of some of the earlier copy protection schemes.

Funny thing is, 15 years after that, I became roommates with one of the employees that had worked there, and we didn't realize the connection until later on. Huge laughs ensued due to the massive coincidence. He said he had hated me for doing that.
