    Default a proposal

since I cannot concieve of a better place, I will post here:

does anyone think its a good idea to set up an organized thread, in the appropriate forum, to teach a foreign language? I am inspired by a thread in the AAR section in EB, where a person offered to give the basics of English.

and how does Arabic sound for starters, if its Ok in the first place?

Not a bad idea, but I think this should be in the Watchtower. Although there is a "Talk your own language thread" in the Frontroom.

the talk in your language isn't to teach the language, but to speak it to fellow speakers of the same language(s)

It is an interesting proposal all right. I don’t know which forum is best to post this in though…or where it would get the most notice, but you don’t need a separate forum to do it…just start a social group and those who wish to learn can join.

Sounds cool. Though the English thread was more for people who knew words but not grammar. I don't think many of us know any Arabic.

Cool store, bro! I want some ham.
    No ham, pepsi.
They make deli slices of frozen pepsi now? Awesome!
You also need to purchase a small freezer for storage of your pepsi.
It runs on batteries. You'll need a few.
Uhh, I guess I won't have pepsi then. Do you have change for a twenty?

Just out of curiosity, what are the nationalities of the Arabs in your country? The Arabic language has plenty of dialects, but of course there is traditional Arabic.

Maroccan mostly, but only a handful speaks arab, most are berbers and aren't exactly fond of the arabs.

    oh, I see.

even if the ones you knew spoke arabic, I would be of no use. The Moroccan dialect is too different...
I see. so you think a user group is ideal? well, we can start one, providing I or anyone else who can teach this language has time to teach.

but my proposal is only initial; my hope is that Arabic is the first of several languages taught here, followed by say Latin, or Greek, or farsi, etc...

so a social group it is. now to get the basics sorted out.

No practical use needed, I expect people here to speak dutch. But it's always fun to learn another language, especially one that is so very different.

I think that'd be a good idea if we have a willing community of speakers who can devote their time to a member who desires to learn a foreign language.

I don't think we should start out with a set number of languages, I think we should have our volunteer teachers teach their native tounge, ie Fragony teaching Dutch, Husar teaching German, SFTS teaching Texan.

otherwise, that's a very good suggestion indeed. I am organizing my first lesson ATM (slowly). it shall be about pronouns (its hard to introduce yourself without them afterall). so who will do what?

so should I teach dialect, or classical Arabic? (the two are different, so it matters).

I will teach only urban south levantine (spoken by urban palestinians and jordanians), if you choose dialect.

Classical. Let's see how this plays out, again excellent idea. One language at the time imho. Don't want to be freeriding, but I really don't know if I have the time to take on something similar.

I don't suppose it matters if it is more than one langauge at once.. but i will only attempt one at a time anything more would just fry grizzy's brain...

Have you setup a group for the activity... (if so... link please)

it takes time to organize the information in the first place: I have to find new grammar books/sources* (my old ones are in kuwait), find a way of quikly typing stuff in Arabic (I cannot type Arabic), scan some samples of Arabic, and once all that is done, then a group will surely go up.

as you can see, its first organize and prepare, then do.

also, I have a lot of work to do outside this. I have to write up my research paper-dinosaur metabolism is a difficult subject

*even though I can write the arabic language, and read it perfectly, I still need those books to explain it more effectively. they also have an organized format that is simpler than just by memory.

I think it is a wonderful idea!!
Although I doubt if I could learn how to speak Arab(or Dutch or Swedish etc) but it would mean a lot if I could learn how to read and write in it! (using Google translator turns simple sentence into Tarzan like sentence a la "Me good, you bad!")
    So, I support this idea!!!!

Ibrahim is Arabic for Abraham. Its not a very common name, as most Arabs prefer to call children Ahmad or Muhammad. actually, it was never a common name in the Arab world. As to why it sounds jewish: well, the name is loaned from Hebrew (in fact, when I get to it, it has an odd declension, because of being foreign). it also helps that Arabic is related to Hebrew.

And I was actually named for Abraham Lincoln though, not the prophet. mom picked it.

lastly, I have finally written up and submitte the paper for college, so now I can focus on this. expect to have some more news in a week.

@Caius: If you want to teach spanish, I suggest you get the material ready for when I set up the group. the job is yours.
