    Default Horse Archers

I was playing Russia and saw that these guys outranged muskets and yeas like yippee and trained a few of them. Imagine my dismay that they are just glorified dragoons. Isn't this one step back from M2TW or RTW? I understand the compromise between realism and the time it would have taken to implement move fire for 1 but I am still sad.

Who else will mourn our old horse archers of death?
Fighting isn't about winning, it's about depriving your enemy of all options except to lose.

I dislike Horse archers in RTW/M2TW with a passion - they can take on anything en masse by simply toggling on/of the fire at will button and redeploy close to the targets. I am glad that mounted ranged units (dragoons) arent that overpowered in this game.

I hear Magyar Khan is headed toward C/A headquaters with a large Mongol army and a stern expression .

Okay, honestly... I rather enjoy using Light Dragoons and the like to harass the enemy. I still hate HAs in other TW incarnations.

Firing from horseback seems rather useless to me, given the delays, and the tendency of horse gunners and archers to wait until the ground troops get a volley off...and the simple fact that they have fewer men...

Anyway, dragoons are great for flanking operations and a bit of router chasing or charging wavering enemies.

I send my horse gunners around the flanks. Either the whole army turns towards them like big dummies, giving my cannons a nice shot, or they don't turn around. Which is when I shoot them.

Or you get dog piled by cavalry... Atleast with HA, there's a noticable range bonus.

If I never see another HA in my life I would die happy
And when the brazen cry of achilles
Was heard among the trojans, all their hearts
Were troubled, and the full-maned horses whirled
The chariots backward, knowing griefs at hand...

Well, that too. The AI cavalry has a serious boner for my own cavalry. Sometimes though, if there are fewer of them, I can seriously hurt them with a close range volley and route them. Two birds, one musket ball.

I shouldn't have to live in a world where all the good points are horrible ones.

Is he hurt? Everybody asks that. Nobody ever says, 'What a mess! I hope the doctor is not emotionally harmed by having to deal with it.'
