Not a lot, you build a few things then seige and take a village with a funny name, if you have played any Total War games before you won't have missed anything important. Click the objectives tab in the bottom right for what to do next, I think you need to get access rights from one of the native tribes.

One last thing. I noticed the save games you posted were missing an "e" in their names: British_Colonials_1.empir_save instead of British_Colonials_1.empire_save. I added the "e" so they showed up ingame, I'm just curious why this happened

No idea, I just uploaded to filefront and copied the link. The main thing is you got playing.

Can you please pm if you ever get this resolved? I had the same issue. I played that first battle like a dozen times. I eventually started a normal campaign. But i do feel like i missed out on a big part of ETW.
