I think when you promote someone from captain/brigadier to admiral/general.

That the age clock is ticking on the captain/brigadier for as long as he isn't promoted it isn't determined randomly, after all I get death messages for my Brigadiers and Captains too. The only way to be certain you are getting a fresh commander is by recruiting either a flagship or a generals bodyguard from a high enough barracks/shipyard.

No wonder he's 108! John Paul Jones is invicible! Everyone knows that. I completely forgot about the whole invincible thing.

In reality, I didn't realize I had Mr. Jones until after I sent him on a suicide run into a fleet of galleons.

I am playing the Dutch and my campaign is now in the year 1765. I still have the rake I started with. The poor but trustfully guy is now 95. He just spent some time in Sweden to do some reconnaissance. It can be rather cold out there.

This guy came out 'fresh' from a shipyard on a third rate flagship at the ripe old age of 106 :P
