Default Getting Empire Total War to run well

Its glitchy and slow, the battles run OK, but the campaign is so laggy, anyway here is my system ,though its 2 years old it was state of the art at the time:

    HP Pavilion
    AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual
    core processor 3800 +
2.00 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM
    (Physical address extension)
    (Windows XP service pack 3)

What component if any of you can make anything of that would help make empires run better? Whilst not breaking the bank

New graphic card? video and audio? more memory?

    My opinion.

    For you, nothing. Sorry mate.

That Comp is easily 4+ years old, any money you throw at it would be wasted in my view. Again you could look at spending $50-100 at tossing in a new CPU or some RAM, but your performance gains are going to be minimal when IMO you could be saving that money towards a new box.
