Ugh. I once had a terrible ear infection a year back. One night it was so bad that I couldn't sleep. I wasn't even able to read or do anything else productive, because with every heartbeat, my ears literally felt like they were exploding. Super Market is completely correct.

In fact, in the short run, beating yourself is a relief, as it takes your attention away from the primary pain. But for anytime longer than a minute, you end up hurting in more places than you initially started off as, especially if you overkill the self-beating.
