Latter in Bismark's career he tried to maintain a system of alliances and treaties to isolate France and maintain Germany's new influence in Europe. However, when he left power, the system spiraled out of control and lead to the alienation of many of Germany's former allies as well as a shift in the overall diplomatic alignment of Europe. Many historians say it was one of the main causes of World War I.

Big book on international everything. Highly recommended.

Yeah, that was one of my main possibilities that I thought of. It also involves Portugal, so that's a bonus (Though Portugal doesn't come very favoured of all that process.) Curiously enough, by 1913, there was a second "secret agreement" between Germany and the UK to divide the major Portuguese colonies between them. South Angola and North Mozambique for Germany, North Angola and South Mozambique for the UK.

While I find it an interesting subject to write the essay on, the fact is that I know very little from it, and with it, source knowledge. Could you point me to a few sources to see if I might follow that one?
