Hmm... while we're on the subject, how would you rank Avast!, pevergreen?

Avast! and AVG are OK, but they are free. So is Spybot. They all have incredibly low detection rates. You are susceptible to almost everything with them. Just read the reviews. They are disappointing. The free ones may be good for what they are, but they will not come close to the paid antivirus programs.

I used to have Avast! and then I got McAfee and McAfee cleaned out whole bucketload of malware that Avast! never detected. Then I got Kaspersky and it cleaned out several more types of malware, but this time more serious, such as worms and spyware, that McAfee never suspected were there. So get Kaspersky. No one is truly safe without it, as in addition to the best protection it has the fastest response times of all anti-malware programs and is updated a couple of times a day. It was also the only anti-malware to detect the Conficker worm and delete it for quite some time.

Kaspersky also keeps track of what you are infected with and sends the data to the company website, where they analyse it, contributing to the fast response times. Kaspersky is always the first one to discover a virus, and always the first one to respond. Even though some say there are better anti-malware programs, everyone agrees that Kaspersky has the fastest response time.

Interesting, but unless I can keep renewing the free trial I still won't go for it. It's a principle thing; people should have free protection from the crap that floats around out there.

Keep on living like that Mr.Principle and you will soon fall into deep trouble. Sure, we should have protection from that, but actually, this is a capitalist world. It is also a world with crime in it. You have to buy locks for your doors so that you will not get broken into. You also should keep your money in a bank for both the safety and the interest. We cannot act on principles all the time, and especially if we have such silly principles. Just wait until you have to wipe your computer clean and then perhaps it will cause you to change your principles. You would not believe how many of my classmates had that done to their computers. And they had paid antivirus programs mind you. Much better than Avast! and AVG. Not Kaspersky though, which is why they had to wipe their computers clean.

Seriously, are you kidding me? "people should have free protection from the crap that floats around out there"? That is the most naive thing I have heard in months. Get that trial, scan your computer, fix your problems and if you want to know how to keep it for a longer time, just PM me.
