It's not so much the advantage as the ability to modify/change the game, it immediately makes people suspicious that more changes have been made(I was in a game where people accused someone of cheating for choosing non-orig. faction, even though he lost and all the units were normal)
thats why asking if its okay is a nice thing to do imo, just to reassure people
