Crap, I already created a poll, but it says "You can only add a poll to a thread within 30 minutes of posting the thread.", not allowing me to post it. Gotta ask a mod...
The poll managed to include all 30 mercenaries discussed in this thread, not leaving out a single one!

1. Toxotai Kretikoi
2. Hoplitai
3. Samnitici Milites
4. Dunaminaca
5. Tindanotae
6. Bataroas
7. Curoas
8. Curepos
... These are the ones I often found very useful - I determine which ones I really like by which ones would be more frequently available if I had my way. On rare occasions, meaning when/if I campaign within their AOR, I use German mercenary thanes (forgot the precise native name) and Shipri Tukul.
I am honoured to have been presented with my first baloons -- by Ibrahim for tactical observations
and with my second balloonby Christopher Burgoyne for physical elaboration on the advantages conferred by the Kontos over the Xyston.
Wait, WTF? Why are the choices not showing up??? I just posted 30 choices, and they do not appear!!!

Wow, man; it's only a poll, simmer down. Although I can't really understand how you could not know how to create a poll, it is still not worth all that anger you have. My fav:
Galatian Wild Men
Celto-Hellenic Hoplites (<--- I really hope they make it in EB2; they're my fav unit, merc or not, in-game!)
Massalian Hoplites
Gallic Archers

This thread is closed. Use the other thread, the one with a working poll please.
Stop it Meth. You are replying to this thread this very moment. I saw it on your user profile, current activity bar. IT IS CLOSED!!! GOT IT, CLOSED!!!!

The mercenary phalanxes are pretty cool, too. However, I tend to avoid using phalanxes, and rather prefer using thureophoroi or thorakitai as my line troops. Celto-Hellenic hoplites are just as good.
Btw, you don't have the authority to close threads.
Wut?Bit Glenn Gould there.

Guys, seriously, this thread is closed. Take it to the other one, the one with a working poll. And Meth, if you post here, I will report you for the second time, which I doubt will lead you to any good.
I like all the mercs in the game. I use mercs at every possible opportunity, no matter the cost.
AP, you want to report people for posting in a thread?
Who cares, grow up.

Classical hoplites have got to be some of the most versatile mercs. I've had good uses for those guys in practically every campaign where I could afford them.
They are especially good for sieges.

Hmm. I never use classical hoplites. They're too obselete for me, far too easy to outflank in their tight formation. I'm more of a thureophoroi/thorakitai kind of guy. Their mobile formations, combined with their javelins, make these soldiers war-winning troops.
Classical hoplites are usually more widely availble. You can't get thureophoroi easily in the east. I also think they're less expensive, but I'm not sure. With ample support, they can be just as good at winning battles as the newer troops. Also, I just like the older hoplite style more.
Parthian Nationalist
Gonna have to agree with Meth on the hoplite/thureophoroi debate - i've just had two units of thureophoroi and one unit of thorakitai hold a rocky patch of ground against a ptolie halfstack, and then kill the routing general with a volley of javelins - also great for city fights!![]()

Exactly. Those javelins are invaluable.
Creatan Archers, they are insane killers with those bows and I have 1-2 in avery Consular (or Proconsular) army.
'For months Augustus let hair and beard grow and occasionally banged his head against the walls whilst shouting; "Quinctillius Varus, give me my legions back"' -Sueton, Augustus.

Thracian peltasts usually "does" it for me...AP swords, tons of javelins, pretty much kicks ass...
