New Quotes for EB 1

Greetings Europa Barbarorum Fans!





As I am sure many of you know, there has been an ongoing quotes project over on the Org forums. While the focus of that project was to improve the quality and increase the quantity of the loading screen quotes for EB2, the response has been so good that we have decided to release a slightly abridged version of the new quotes for use with EB1!

Download all three files.

Quotes goes in your EB/data/text folder.
Descr_quotes_lookup and descr_transition_screen go in your EB/data folder.

Say "yes" if asked to overwrite old files. It is always a good idea to backup your old files first, just in case. I will not of course take any responsibility if it all goes wrong somehow, although I might feel bad about it.

That's it. I have playtested these files on my own version of EB1 and have encountered no problems. If anyone does, PM me or post on this thread and I will do what I can to help.

The new quotes file contains ca. 240 quotes, at least half of which are new (you will have seen some of them on the quotes project thread). Almost all of the remaining old quotes have been redone to include correct citations and often the original language. A few old quotes do remain to be redone in this way.

All of the old quotes of questionable historical accuracy have been removed, including the Shakespeare, Confucius and Sun Tzu, as well as any of the other quotes that had questions raised about their authenticity.

The quotes have all been formatted and edited for length and appearance, and the strings have been renumbered from scratch, making it easy for someone to add or modify the quotes if they wish. Anyone interested in doing so is advised to contact me first for some hints.

Bear in mind that the work still remains to some extent WIP: you may find that some of the longer quotes overlap the artwork on the loading screens. The layout on EB2 is somewhat different.

I do not anticipate posting any more versions of these files for EB1. Any further developments will be applied to EB2.

Apropos, there will still be some surprises left for EB2: I left out at least 50 quotes that refer to new factions in one way or another, and I have some more material that has yet to be formatted, so there will eventually be ca. 300 quotes for EB2.

A final note: the files work equally well on any M2TW mod. The only difference is that for M2TW, when you put the quotes.txt file in the EB/data/text folder, you have to delete the quotes string file that is also in that folder. When you start the game, it will generate a new one. If you don't delete it, you will not see any changes to your quotes even if you have correctly installed the text files. You must install the other two files as well, just as for an RTW mod.

A lot of fussy work has gone into getting this right: if you wish to use these files in whole or part for another modification, please ask us nicely first.

I think people would rather see them ingame, seeing that to get the full quote, you have to find it then scroll down a bit to the author.

I am going to fix the quotes for EB1, hopefully in a couple of weeks. I have got the blank template done so it's just a lot of copy-pasting: all the quotes will fit and be centred. I'll include a lot of new stuff ye haven't seen yet, but there'll still be lots and lots of surprises left for EB2. Patience, lads, I will get it done.

I just posted some quotes from the bible in the EB II quotes thread, which are from the right time period and which I hope are relevant.

The Bible isn't important during EB's time period or geographically, so I'd be a bit sceptical about adding them all the same. EB has no Hasmonean faction that appears in 140BC.

Actually, I will add a few of Urgs quotes in, at least for the EB1.2 quotes that I'm working on: as far as quotes go they don't have to be from a faction, just from the world and time covered by the map. This hack attack has set me back a bit but I will post a finished quotes file for EB1 reasonably soon.

First I installed (replaced) the files, loaded the game and crashed on first load screen after the cinematics. Reloaded the game, worked fine, but nothing new, all old quotes passing through the load screens like always. Sorry it didnt work here at all.

Alien- your problem is indicative of not having installed ALL THREE FILES correctly. Without descr_transition_screen and descr_quotes_lookup, the quotes file will do nothing. If you have Vista, you have to be sure that the new files have actually replaced the old ones. Otherwise you got bubkes.
I recommend redownloading and reinstalling ALL THREE FILES in the correct locations as per the first post. Let me know what happens.


Bigstape- I have no idea why your game runs slower: mine has not been affected in any way. There were ca. 160 quotes in EB1.2 originally: the new files bump that up to ca. 240, which is only a 50% increase in very short text files so should have no effect on speed. The EBBS or EDU are much much longer, for instance (theye are not changed by these files: just comparing). Did you install all three files?

Turns out it wasn't the quotes, just another problem with my computer cured with a restart.

I installed all three files and saw the quotes; but after i installed EB would CTD every time I started it. It would work fine the second time I started the game though. This happened continously (basically every other time I launched the program), forcing me to uninstall RTW and EB.

Problem solved; but now no new quotes :-/. Any suggestions?

Are you a Vista victim user?

I ask because apparently copying files over in Vista is not as straightforward as I'm used to in XP. Make sure that the new files have actually overwritten the old ones. Otherwise I'm at a loss: the only reason that CTDs can occur from these files is if all three are not correctly installed (i.e., if you have new quotes.txt but not new descr_quotes_lookup). If the numbers/threads/strings don't match up over all three files, then it will crash.

I'm having issues with the new quotes too (on win XP though).

I even totally uninstalled RTW/EB and reinstalled it, then applied the new quotes. I get crashes when loading/starting games or when battles are loading, but not always.
Reinstalling the backed up files solves the problem, so it can't be something else.
