Absolute Monarchy: cleaning up bad minister 'candidates'

Just a tip: if you have absolute monarchy and you are about to replace one of your ministers with a better one you might take this moment to 'clean up' all the dead-wood from the candidates list. Leave your good candidate for last and quickly cycle (dragging and dropping rather than using the "kick" button) all the crappy ones through the 'target post'. As an absolute monarch, in a turn, you can change ministers as many times as you like (it's good to be a King). Once all the ones you do not like are gone, put the proper candidate in the slot. The candidates list will be slowly repopulated with new hopefuls, hopefully better than the original ones.

I agree. This is what I do as soon as I start a new game and this is why I love absolute monarchies.

I don't quite understand what you're saying

I know you can change ministers and i know how to do it, but how do you make the crappy candidates disappear?

Also, i know most people probably already know this but just today i realized that more stars next to a ministers name does not necessarily make him better for the job than one with half or even a quarter of his stars. I had a lot of unrest in Paris and Alsace Lorraine, but all my ministers had massive amounts of stars, yet the unrest said that people in government were the main cause of unrest.

It was at this point i began to explore the ministers individually, their traits, and not just glance at the stars next to their name and appoint them based on that, which is what i had always done, just glanced at their stars and appointed based on who had the most, traits be damned.

Turns out the justice minister and overall head of government were a right pair of bastards so i had to sacrifice some prestige and diplomatic relations per turn in return for happier lower classes.

Now, all my ministers are old and have both feet in the grave and are getting comfortable and ready to drift into the nothingness that is death, and all my candidates are 2-star wasters with the worst bunch of traits you could imagine. If i can boot them all out and bring in new ones, that'd be dandy, but how?

I do... I think i get what you mean. Find a crap candidate holding a position, keep dragging crap candidates into the position over and over so that it refreshes the new hopefulls?

Yes, but make sure the last guy you drop in is at least 4 stars. Also, if good minister is about to die, try to keep a decent replacement around. So if both your army and navy guys are hitting 70, keeping a young patron-tactician-honest guy in waiting would be wise.

The problem is that competent ministres just might not come ever since the new ones have completely random stars and traits. I am sure a flock of bad ministres can tank a game if no decent substitute deigns to appear for a while.

If only they could be as good as the Prussian army ministre or the Russian justice ministre...

Yup, for absolute monarchies it does. It also does to a smaller degree for republics. In the case of republics however, you are limited to dragging and ropping only from the 'colony theater governor' slots to ministers. For republics, you cannot drag and rop 'the oposition'. In the case of absolute monarchies there is no opposition: just 'candidates' all are "drag and droppable".
