I'm playing the aedui campaign (vh/vh), already defeated Arverni and I'm engaged in an endless war against Romani.
It happens about every 10 turns that a roman diplomat ask me to become protectorate.
The first times I've firmly refused, but then accepted making a payment request of 5000-7000 mnai. They accept the proposal, but then I re-open the diplomatic page and simply inform them that the military access has been canceled. The negotiation is then closed and so we are allied with trade rights granted.
What is strange is that all this happens while they siege one of my cities so, just after negotiation, the siege is temporary stopped but then they started it again in the same AI turn!
Diplomatic behaviour is just opposite to military one.

This shouldn't surprise you at all. There are numerous cases like that one, we've all experienced similiar situations.

Or just use an assassin to get rid of the guy. It's what I do for roleplaying reasons when an enemy diplomat is threatening me, or if they offend me with a similiar offer.

For once a Hellene Strategos and Roman Imperator agrees. I kill any diplomat asking such ridiculous terms. Just as I kill any diplomat my enemies send to each other or others. No need to let them cooperate.

Exactly. You have to protect your honour and dignity sometimes Also, I too like to mess with other factions' businesses. Help one who has the shorter end of the stick, prevent a small faction (or one I'm at war with) from making alliances, etc. Diairei kai Basileue, or as you Romaioi say, Divide et Impera (sp?).

Well I agree about the honour but politic is dirt so I'll continue to take advantage of this.
I've also noticed that with these extorsions their financial situation has been severely damaged, reducing their militar aggressivity.

actually, I typically just counter offer them, and ask them to become a protectorate.

and I alo ask for 30,000 in every turn, and 100,000 down

lol , there is usually at least one time in the game where one of your allies will declare war on you for no reason .. so you ask for trade rights and ceasefire , they agree , then attack you next turn .. this goes on for like 10+ turns until you just cbf and let them attack you , or counter attack....

i think we found our problem!!
But in essence, if the romans kept breaking the ceasefires, its because they already had armies en route to attack you and they will continue on till they attack your city no matter the diplomacy. The best bet would be to put a defense force or a fort on a strategic location which will stop the enemy army from moving along its designated route to attack you. TO be sure they your army dont get attacked/ destroyed and your lands wide opened, make sure its always stronger and larger than the enemy armies.

Some hellenic might/ belarus slingers / ferocious mercanies shall stop the romans dead in their tracks!

(btw i train my assassins on spies... they for some reason like going through byzantium =]

No we didn't!
If so a smart AI wouldn't send a diplomat to negotiate a protectorate while sending stack after stack to conquer my settlements. Moreover this alloows me to extort a lot of money to those stupid Romani.

In any case I've already done what you suggested, I re-conquered Mediolanum a strategic settlement that prevent any roman army to cross the passes to Gaul.
