The best bet would be to put a defense force or a fort on a strategic location which will stop the enemy army from moving along its designated route to attack you. TO be sure they your army dont get attacked/ destroyed and your lands wide opened, make sure its always stronger and larger than the enemy armies.

If so a smart AI wouldn't send a diplomat to negotiate a protectorate while sending stack after stack to conquer my settlements. Moreover this alloows me to extort a lot of money to those stupid Romani.
