    Default So much money...

So my student loan for the year finally came, normally it comes in gradual payments but I got it all at once due to some mix up. Now, I have £560 to spend on what I want.

Last year I bought a PS3 and some games, but I can't really think of what to buy right now, since I plan on spending most of my gaming time on EB.

    Any ideas?

You have much to teach us.

I know it might make me sound boring, but whenever my loans have come and gone and I got some money left over I always attempt to get a few books(among other things). My most recent acquisition is the Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy series, which i purchased off of Amazon for a good price. Got one of those "single book" compilations of the series for around 25 USD (shipping included).

I'm tempted to gamble it all on the stock market, just to see what it is like to be a businessman or whatever the right term is.

Or I could bet it on the football when the next season starts. I know a guy who places big bets (1k plus) on games using this system called any unquoted. It means if neither team scores more than 3 goals, then he can net a decent profit. He also places a lot of bets on games involving the likes of San Marino and Andorra, if you look around you can get odds that make it worthwhile.

Actually, plunking a lot of it into the market right now is a good idea. It's already hit the bottom from this recession and it's not going much lower, the only question is how long before it starts going back up again. If you've got cash to spare, slot it into a long-term mutual fund and then try and forget it exists (except to add more whenever you're able). You won't be able to do anything with it for many years, but you'll have a lot more to work with when you do!

If I ever go bankrupt, I'm probably wouldn't do it by blowing it all on the high life. I think I will just gradually waste it all away at the races, take some money off a loan shark, lose it all, go on a dramatic spree to win it back in the bet of a life time, but then lose it all before I pay it back. Then I get my legs broken and I live out the rest of my life drinking buckfast and living in a dumpster.

For a humble fee of £ 280, I will advice you on how to invest half of that money into the promising product "Andres".

With all due respect, Andres, this is a fun, non-serious thread. It is not meant for serious business proposals for your legal firm, my dear lawyer.

My services are available to bring suit against Andres for his tortious statements, for the small sum of £279.

Call me crazy, but wouldn't it be wise to use the excess the money that you do not need for school to pay back some of your loans? After all you are getting money for an education, not a PS3.

AFAIK UK student loans work differently, you only pay them back if you earn a certain % over the average UK wage. I could be wrong though...

I agree with Ice, that money is NOT yours. It has been LENT to you for a specific purpose, and using it outside that purpose is not only putting a burden on your future self or your parents, but it is spending someone else's money without their permission and against their wishes. Call that whatever you will. (I am the recipient of loan money myself, so I know the temptation :P) Do yourself a favor and save it to pay the loans back later. When you are struggling to pay them back later and have to support yourself straight out of school, you will thank yourself for making the decision.

    Haha

Oh, I forgot to mention, my parents refunded me 700 dollars I overpaid in loans (I had an agreement with them on the amount we would each pay when I was freshman). I used that money to buy a plane ticket to Brussels for a summer Eurotrip. So i guess I can't really get high and mighty on you.
