ive never seen the a.i. retreata, nor have they ever surrendered; even when the odds are a full stack with enough canons to obliterate them, to 1 or 2 units.

Maybe it was programmed to act like Clint Eastwood. Who know.

Still, there should be some type of sanity check before total destruction is inflicted on the ai by the human player.

The AI was advertised as being able to know if a battle is important or not. When to retreat or with draw.

I have not seen an example of this. So if it knows it is now acting on the knowledge.

Come to think of it, I can’t think of a single army stack backing off from a full army.

Both tactical and strategic retreats need to be added to this game, ASAP.

Would be a nice addition if they did add it, but I do remember potent enemy AI forces run off (for reasons unknown to all) and get run down in the back by my cavalry in M2. Nearly wiping them all out in the process, so yes, I'm a bit sceptical.

Same here: not a SINGLE AI retreat, even in the most hopeless situations; the only exception being that post patch 1.2, the AI sometimes surrenders when besieged.

When they fix this, I better not see the AI retreat deeper into my own territory, you know, like right in the middle of six towns he can raid

I've had it happen to me twice in the RTI 2 Campaign (French and Indian War). When attacking the first French fort (I forget the name now) and then when attacking Fort Louisbourg in Acadia. Incidentally, there's a bug where if they surrender Fort Louisbourg to you, the last part of the F&I war chapter doesn't open up to you. I had to go back and fight the battle to advance.
