Default Studying in Melbourne next semester - Housing Advice needed

I am going to study at the University of Melbourne this next semester (July- Dec). And I need some advice regarding housing.

    1. Seeing as I am only staying for one semester what type of housing would you recommend? (Hostel, student appartments, residental college private market etc)

    2. Are there any websites where people advertise rooms? Ie an exhange student who leases out his room for one semester while he/she is away. (I see that the University pages have a search engine for the private market, but I wonder if there are others as well)

    3. In what areas of Melbourne should I look at if I want to be within walking distance (10 - 20 min) from campus. Preferably in an area with other students.

I can't help you with housing Din, but as it turns out, the Gregoshi clan is heading to Melbourne in late June through the end of July. My wife took a six week work assignment there. I might have to look you up and say "hi!".

I don't think we have many/any Melbournites here in the Backroom.

Yes, sure that would be nice. I will be going down under on the 14th of July. Just PM me to arrange a meeting.

As for the housing, I'm sure it will work out. I just wanted some additional input as a supplement to websites, but I guess they will just have to do.

Maybe you would have more luck in the frontroom or entrance hall ?

Thumbs up Re: Studying in Melbourne next semester - Housing Advice needed

I would use the internet and look at the price of renting a place near the uni and then compare with the student digs. Often student digs are small/shared but very close to uni vs normal places which might be further away but bigger and more free.

Before moving to Sydney in 2000 (from Perth) I used Domain and a few other property sites to scope out where I was going to live.

    For Victoria:

I must be getting senile, because I could have sworn that you lived in Melbourne before you moved to Sydney (which was the main reason I posted this in the Backroom), but now that you mention it I seem to remember that your location was Perth, Western Australia, Australia and so on, when I first joined.

I've spent about 4 days in total in Melbourne. I liked the CBD, good coffee, plenty of nice food and the trams are cute.

Overall it was easy enough to get around, fairly flat and lots of nice things to do.

    Gah! Melbourne, Gah!

Greg is coming to Australia? Excuse me, I'm just going to go book a trip to melbourne now.

You should come up to Brisbane at least. We do have the best beaches and the best weather. Melbourne is horrid at that time of year. Plus Brisbane has the most .Orgahs. Myself, sapi, other gameroom friends, Warluster and so on.

Well, we did have good beaches before the storms...

I was going to meet CaptainBlackadder, but he came down sick on the day. Awwwr.

I take exception at your remarks... except the one about Melbourne.

Melbourne is not a choice as June 8 to about July 17 is work for the wife - assuming things stay on schedule. The kids and I will probably be Melbourned out by the time she is done and ready to bolt the city. If Din-Heru isn't getting there until July 20, we may miss him unless the project runs long. Here's hoping for a few days delay.

Brisbane is a pretty certain stop after that. In addition to a bunch of stuff to see in and around the city, a couple of my old Clan Doragon mates that I still maintain contact with live there (barocca being one) and I hope to meet them for the first time. It also looks like I need to set aside an Org Day.

I'm still not sure of an exact schedule. We'll probably just set an arrival and departure date (June 22 to July 29/30?) and worry about the inbetween once we get there and the wife's work schedule becomes clearer. However, I think we may very well spend 4-5 days in Brissie and vicinity sometime in the last two weeks of July. We'll probably go to New Zealand for another week on the way home. My daughter insists we must track down and see some butt ugly blue bird that lives there. And the Lord of the Rings movie geek in me wants to see MiddleEarth and isn't objecting too much.

Wooh! When the time gets closer, I'll gather the 'clans' and it will probably only be me that turns up.

But every Orgah I meet is another I don't need to meet when I visit others.

Low and behold the Melburnian comes to the rescue

    1) Well the easiest option is on campus you are going to be very close to the campus that way. What's your budget? Inner city living can be expensive. If you can afford it rentals are relativly easy to get.

    2) I am not to sure on this one i am afraid

    3) If you want walking distance you really need to go to the Carlton area that has plenty of students who live in the old victorian terrace houses. It has everything you need within walking distance food bars and all the other things plus it is within walking distance of the CBD which means you can go wherever you want.

One other piece of advice you have got to go see a game of A.F.L in your time over here. If people ask say you go for Essendon (the greatest team in exsistance)

As for the Melbourne bashing shame, shame, shame Melbourne is great this time of year the weather is all part of the cities charm.

    Thank you for the advice

I quess my budget is A$ 300 p/w for accomodation at most. (given that the exchange rate doesn't skip much above 5 NoK/AUD)
I am thinking of going for one of these:
    Swinnerton:http://home.exetel.com.au/denco/STUD...swinnerton.php
    or
    Balmoral:http://home.exetel.com.au/denco/STUD...e/balmoral.php

Seeing as I need it to be fully furnished, and they seem to be close enough to campus without being too expensive. Swinnerton seems to have the highhest standard of the two and is closer to campus?

And of course I will go see a game.

Oh, and Greg, I will arrive early on the 14th. (Leaving Norway on the 12th...). Guess I was a bit unclear in that post.

That is great Din! We will be within walking distance of each other (or so it seems to me). I'll be in Southbank staying at Freshwater Place - about halfway up. The wife and daughter aren't too keen on being up that high.

BTW you were clear on the date you'd be there. For some reason I had the 20th stuck in my brain. Probably because June 20th is when we'll be leaving for Oz.
