Pirates in Cuba

Cuba is (actually was... before I captured it) a pirate stronghold in my Maratha campaign. Spain is not destroyed, it is alive and kicking (and fighting half of the living factions) and still has all of it's posessions in America (except Cuba), and all the posessions in Europe except Gibraltar. The pirates also hold their two starting regions. Was there an invasion?

Maybe it rebelled and became pirate? I've seen this happen before (to me, unfortunately)

Any rebelion of a province in the caribean (and some South American regions) results in the region joining the priates, rather than becoming an un-afiliated rebel faction as happens in Europe, NA or India.

Probably that is the cause. But frankly, have you ever seen a nation loose one of its' starting territories to rebels? I have only seen this occur when someone captured a new territory (and had unrest) or when that nation lost its' last region in its’ home theater (and becoming extinct).

Perhaps Spain sold the territory to another faction as a result of which it rebelled due to religious problems.

I have seen the AI buy only regions it needs to have in order to achieve the victory conditions. In this case, which faction needs Cuba to achieve victory? Not France, not England... Who else? Probably only Spain...

I have seen just this. It usually occurs in a region with mixed/conflicting religion (already unhappy) and when the faction is at war and maybe suffers defeats large enough to generate unrest (opposite of the happiness generated by success).

During a recent Prussian campaign, in alliance with Austria against Poland & Lithuania, their southern most region rebelled against them -probably as a result of a reduced garrison and the large proportion of Orthodox christians.

I think the handling of pirates in the caribean is a bit dissappointing. The pirate problem in this region was largely the result of the conflicts between the the major European powers and their repeated use and dismissal of privateers. They shouldn't really be treated as a faction 'per se' but rather a by-product of the naval warfare in the area and in particular the paying-off of ships.

The pirates also had Cuba in my American campaign, within 10 turns, and before the patch, so there was no chance of it being naval invasion. When they had Cuba, they were turning out 1/2 to 2/3 stacks of galleons and fluyts. By the time I got my naval tech up to build 24-pdr frigates, there were 2 of these blockading my ports, after they pretty much swept the sea clean of British.

Yes, what usually happens is that someone else takes it with 2-3 units raiding army while it's undefended, loses it to rebellion, and the original owner doesn't have the spare forces to exceed the AI's threshold for attacking the new rebel stack in the city. Prussia and Poland do this a lot, as do Austria and Turkey, the Maratha's and Mughals, and the Natives in the Americas.

One of the bigger players in the area typically gets them back eventually.

I once had the US emerge after the Cherokee invaded Carolina and the region rebelled.

not always i had the US appear about 5 turns into my GB campaign, it rebelled from a iriquois province if i remember correctly, declared on the 13 colonies and was destroyed bout 10 turns later :D

a) Ottomans losing bulgaria to rebels
b) Austria losing transylvania
c) Russians losing their northern-most province
