Default Gunners with a Leroy Jenkins attitude.

In earlier TW games gunners behaved in a reasonable fashion. When overrun they would abandon their guns and try to escape. Then if the enemy abandoned the captured guns they would eventually return and man then again.

In ETW, gunners seem to have a Leroy Jenkins attitude to their own invincibility. They will fight at their guns even if overrun by cavalry and I've even caught them charging the enemy with their rammers.

Not only that but they never return to their guns, even if the enemy attack is repulsed, They just stand there in a neat line and leave their guns idle until told to reman them. In fact, Puckle Gunners won't reman their guns even if you do try and get them to do so.

What would be preferrable is some simulation of the Waterloo idea where gunners fire until the last moment and then dash for safety behind the nearest supporting unit. Then once the danger is past return automatically to continue the fight. That ought to at least be an option similar to 'skirmish', also there is a need to allow players to order their gunners to abandon their guns.

You can reassign them to their guns. Just select them and move the mouse over their guns. A hand should appear, click on the gun and they run to their guns and start shooting. They will be fixed because the horses have left the building (like Elvis ).

I like your idea about the Waterloo gunners. I don't know if it is possible, bit would add some realism.

That works with every type of gun I've come across except Puckle Guns. The hand just fails to appear for them so, once they are forced off their guns once they are useless.

I hate it too in all previous titles you could tell them to withdraw and then let them continue or halt them, and hide them safely behind a unit. Now when they withdraw they want to take their artillery with them haven't tried telling them to attack a unit then telling them to hide.

Man I never noticed that. I'll have to zoom in for a close up, what a great screen shot that would make...
