After playing 4 out of 5 of ATPG's Mini Mafia's I finally decided to try my hand at one. As indicated by the numeral, I hope that this will be the first of several such games, exploring themes not available in ATPG's games.
For this first installment I've decided upon Mass Effect.
Aboard the Normandy
Conference room
Commander Shepard's face turned grim as he assessed each member of his team one by one. During his mission to expose and hunt down the rogue Specter Saren, Shepard had accumulated many allies and several of those, aliens. Little was known of these beings' past and perhaps even their apparent motivations were pretenses. As the fully armed and armored commander of the Normandy paced around the room, he tried to notice some sign, some clue that one of them had be affected. In the end he shook his head and resigned himself that they would have to proceed with an internal inquiry.
"The Council has just informed me of rather disturbing rumors." Shepard addressed his team, looking at no one in particular. "It seems that in our hunt for Saren, some of our numbers have been unwittingly indoctrinated by Sovereign to pose as double agents in our midst."
"Commander, from what we know of Sovereign, that is not possible. We have never been in direct contact with the ship!" Liara T'Soni had spoken up, enthusiastic as usual.
Shepard raised an eyebrow; Liara's mother, Matriarch Benezia, had already been indoctrinated and had proven to be a foe in the hunt for Saren. Perhaps, like her mother, Liara, had become a tool for Saren and his army of Geth?
"Nevertheless, we need to ascertain the truth of the matter." Garrus Vakarian replied. Once a member of Citadel Security, or C-Sec, he had led the investigation on Saren. Yet, like Saren, he was a Turian. How far could he be trusted?
"I don't like it." Groaned Urdnot Wrex, a Krogan Battlemaster and a bounty hunter. Little was known of his past, but it had been undoubtedly violent as there were no peaceful Korgans. Could a mercenary killer be trusted?
"We can't just ignore this!" Gunnery Chief Ashley Williams interjected. She had joined the team when Shepard had rescued her on Eden Prime and they had thwarted Saren's plan to destroy the colony. She had been the sole survivor of her squad, perhaps not by chance?
"I still do not understand how this could be. As Doctor T'Soni has explained, it should be impossible." Tali'Zorah nar Rayya intoned. A member of the mysterious Quarian species, she lived constantly in a suit which protected the weak immune system of her species against the pathogens harmless to the other races, it also served to conceal her features. Her people had long ago created the Geth, which had turned on them and now apparently served Saren. What if she had a connection to Saren?
Staff Lieutenant Kaidan Alenko shrugged. "Whatever you decide commander, we'll do it." Kaidan had been with Shepard from the start and he trusted him, as much as himself. Yet, Sovereign was reputed to be extremely powerful, what if either of them had been indoctrinated? Would he know if it happened to him? If he could not trust himself, how could he blindly trust Kaidan?
Shepard sat down, holding his head in both hands, trying to figure out who could be indoctrinated. Apparently, the rest of the team was doing likewise as the uncomfortable silence in the room attested. He knew it would not last, soon people would start accusing each other. He only hoped they would get to the bottom of this without losing anyone.
