    Default Russia vs Oslo Rebels

    My Forces:
    1 Generals BodyGuard
    1 Kazaks
    3 Spear Militia
    7 Archer Militia

    Rebel Forces:
    3 Crossbow
    8 Vikings

When I went to Oslo, I originally figured I wouldn't need a large force. Little did I know but the Oslo rebels like to sally well before the siege time is up. I figured I could starve them into submission, so I had to reinforce, and as early as I am in the game, I only had archer and spear militia from the Russians to reinforce from. I originally went to Oslo with just the BodyGuard, Kazaks, 2 Spear and 1 Archer Militia. When I finally received my reinforcements I realized I was definitely outnumbered and outpowered if I left it up to the computer to autocalc. I knew I couldn't survive a head to head fight, so I had to utilize the troops to their greatest advantage. The battle formation was:

    Code:
         <<Enemy>>

    K BG

      A A
        A S S S A
          A A A A
Units were much more spread out than what the diagram indicates. The idea was to have enough space so that if any one Viking unit went after any of the archers, the archer would skirmish away but everyone else would be at a distance to keep firing. The Kazak did a great job drawing one or two of the viking units away, and as the Kazak was always a step away from the Vikings they eventually caused the Viking units that they were engaged with, to rout. The bodyguard unit did a similar thing while going after crossbows.

The Body Guard was used to go after the rebel crossbows. 1 charge and some melee later had the crossbow unit rout. Fortunately some of the Vikings decided to not charge all my other units and instead tried to chase the bodyguard unit, ensuring they wouldn't be threatening the rest of the forces. Half the battle went by and the Vikings were mostly disorganized such that the Vikings finally challenged my spear line, but it was a rather limited challenge by having only one Viking units deciding to ignore the archers and instead go after some meat. By that time, 2 of the 3 crossbow units were done, and several other Viking units were decimated.

    Final Tally:
    Code:
                 Men Men Men Enemies
              Deployed Lost Remaining Killed
    Russians: 541 97 444 380(104)
    Rebels: 565 486 79 97(0)
General's Bodyguard: Casualties Inflicted: 91, Prisoners Caught 90.
    Kazaks:Casualties Inflicted: 50
The Archers ranged from 15 to 30 Casualties inflicted.

I wasn't sure how the battle would turn out, but it worked out quite well. Usually if I don't autocalc, I tend to run my forces into heavier losses, but I have had a few rare occassions it turns out extremely well.
