    Default Samnite Heavy Infantry

I liked training these guys in my old Camillan armies, however since I've had the Polybian reforms they are no longer available. Since they are part of the socii and not the standard Roman units, I wonder if this is perhaps a bug? The Samnite Spearmen and the Pedites Extraordinarii are still available, its just the Samnite Heavy Infantry which have disappeareed...

IIRC I think by Polybian times, the Samnites had been killed off, or not allowed military service due to being untrustworthy.

Believe me, after five years there are no "bugs" in Roman core recruitment. The use of "Samnite" peoples changed, so that that specific unit is no longer available.

OK thanks, I guess Pedites Extraordinarii are better anyway, apart from not having Good Stamina which is a bit of a nuisance.

This never seems to be as great a problem for units under AI control as for player-controlled units. The more battles I fight, it seems, the more I'm coming to favour—and often, rely on—high-stamina units. Not just for light cavalry, who reap the benefits of this advantage when sent to chase down the enemy as they rout, but more and more for line infantry who typically find themselves in protracted engagements. I'm really starting to appreciate "Spartan-flavour" hoplites (next stop, Syrakousai!).

...back on-topic: So, after a time, Rome ceased to employ Samnites as sword-armed assault infantry (but continued to make use of Samnite spearmen)?
Also, I had no idea that the (EB) Roman reforms triggered anything other than "unlocking" new models of factional MIC... probably because I haven't played them, yet, but that's quite interesting to know.

[edit: Apparently, Syracusan hoplites aren't any "hardier" than the Classical (or "Garden") variety available most anywhere else... but I'm still going to Syracuse to recruit them]

That's why I like to train a lot of classical ones, because they have enough stamina to survive almost everything even if they are surrounded.
