Default post 1.02: no wonder AI is feeble and destitute

In my last campaign (playing as Russia) I conquered a few of the trade spots from the Dutch. What I discovered was that the huge blue stacks they had sitting on the anchors were mostly war (weak for most part) ships + fluyts (350 upkeep per turn) with an occasional Indiaman in the mix. So, it seems, the AI is losing more money from the fleet upkeep than it's gaining from the trade...

...not to mention all the ships that lay idle in each trade theater waiting for an opening. One should do it. How hard can that be to code the AI to do?

yes, that too... but I think, it's a bit more reasonable to see 'loser' factions roaming the theaters looking for space than to see a TRADING nation like the Dutch who have a few trade spots from the start, just camp there and lose money with military ships...

really, how hard it would be to code more reasonable AI trading behavior? i believe, the author of Imperial Splendor mod has actually achieved just that with a few parameter adjustments...

The AI factions routinely go broke about mid way through the campaign as their economy is incompetently managed. They overbuild units that sit on the borders in large stacks until they can't build anymore and then they have massive debt. Part of this bugged behavior is a result of a broken diplomacy model that keeps them in a long term war without ever getting peace.

Different forums, different people (mostly), different discussions. Many posts get duplicated on both forums for that reason.

It all relates to the changes that were made. The AI has some priorities and it sticks with them. Money is not there so it goes broke.

That is a part of the reason I said the changes went too far. The AI just can not cope with the lack of funds.

If you look at the cheap troops and the AI building patterns you can see that it is going no where.

No one wanted to see stacks and stacks of Cherokee or Iroquois and it was too easy when you got money.

Now there is no money for troops no matter what faction. It changed the troop levels so now when you can develop there is no one to fight…

Supposedly they are tweaking this (the AI's ability to build troops). At least it was in the upcoming patch notes a few days ago.

On the same token, the minor factions seem to be able to build troops fine for some reason. I ventured into Courland in an early game to discover they had a full stack of line infantry (they used to have milita pre-patch); same with Georgia and Dagestan: both are able to field stacks of line infantry very early in the game.
