Default The Things That Annoy and Amuse You Thread

Inspired by a recent CoD 5 session, where I finally bothered to look at the name of the repeating sniper rifle the Russians get.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PTRS-41

Now, I'm no expert, but generally I don't think it's wise to fire a fifty calibur weapon of any sort without bracing yourself. Our friend Petrenko, however, not only manages to carry this 14.5mm (that's about .57 caliber) 20kg (45lb), 6ft long, beast, but is capable if firing and loading it on the move! Amazing!

I tell ya, give a Russian some vodka and the love of the Motherland and they can do anything
    (Also, bipods are for wusses)

For reference, this is a comparison of bullet sizes:
    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...on_w_scale.png

The round fired by the weapon in question is slightly longer and a teensy bit wider than the .50 BMG at the left. Compare, if you will, to the 5.56mm (2nd from the right) fired by many Western assault rifles.

I had great fun clearing buildings of Germans with that thing

Secondly, in the same game, it always amazes me how Nazi flamethrowers explode if you so much as poke them with a knife, whereas American flamethrowers unaccountably fail to explode even if you get shot in the back repeatedly. Or blown up by a grenade.

I guess Americans aren't allowed to die horrific fiery deaths. Or maybe it has something to do with how the American flamethrower never, ever, runs out of fuel

Heh, I can imagine the recoil of that cumbersome weapon. I've got some experience with a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun, the NSV. That gun was hard to handle with a weighted tripod using short bursts.

One thing about FPS games, that's not entirely realistic, is reloading. Let's say your Kalashnikov's clip has only a few bullets left, and you start reloading. Now, an enemy jumps around the corner, laughs at you reloading. Even though you removed the clip, there's still a bullet in the chamber, and your finger ready on the trigger. But no, you can't shoot, just wait for the reloading animation to finish. Meanwhile the enemy empties his clip into you, and you get to spectate for a while.

Russians, of course, didn't have machine guns in WWII, except the occasional Maxim 1910 which they mostly used to shoot cowards

But yeah, I've got myself a .54 caliber muzzle loader, and I can tell you, with a magnum load you better be ready when you pull the trigger. And smokeless powder is supposed to be a good deal more efficient than black powder too.

See, aren't nitpick threads fun? They even work for games other than TW!

They did have DP machine guns mounted on tanks and as infantry support weapons, and some predecessors of the NSV. But anyways, have you ever played a FPS game without boxes/crates of some kind? It's just impossible.

this is something that really annoys me ...

this occurs in both CoD 4 and CoD WaW.
Grenades are very helpful in both games, but there is a fatal flaw with them. If you happen to be throwing a greande when you are killed, the grenade wont go off. apparently the stopping of the human heart stops the grenades fuse from burning completely in empathy.
"Something can be done, by careful analysis, to sort out truth from propaganda and legend. But this is where the real difficulties begin, since each student inevitably selects, constitutes criteria, according to his own unconscious assumptions, social, ethical or political. Moral conditioning, in the widest sense, plays a far greater part in the matter than most people- especially the historians themselves-ever realize."

Annoy: In BF2142 when you die medics swarm you and your revived quickly. I hate it when the enemy kills you and then lobs a grenade at your corpse that explodes the second after, and only after, the medic hits you with the defibrillator and you get blown to bits the second you get back in action and takes all the guy who can revive you with it.

Amuse: When said tactic fails, with the friendly fire is turned on, accidentally kills everyone in an attempted rush that the grenadiers buddies were trying to pull off.

Being better than the worst does not inherently make you good. But being better than the rest lets you brag.

I've fired my .54 Muzzle with one hand before, but I've never used magnum load.

Note: It wasnt the most comfortable feeling afterward.
