Thread: Hoplite phalanx

    Default Hoplite phalanx

    Hi all!

I understand that original Rome TW hoplite phalanx formation was discarded, but Barbarian Invasion comes with the perfect solution, the Shield Wall. Will it be implemented under EB? (I'm a great fun of greek warfare, so this way i'd like to see strong and historically accurate hoplites.) Thanks for answers!

hey, 1st. welcome to the .org

and to answer your question. you can play EB with the BI.exe - then the shieldwall is implemented for the regarded units. just try this https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=95664

    and have ph[!]un!

IMO shield wall makes them fighting worser than in normal EB, where they only use guardmode. Guardmode can be very effective too as long as the flanks are secured. Ceterum censeo Romam esse delendam.

All official releases of EBI were made to be used on the RomeTW.exe. We will not release a version for BI. However, as Hotseat_User has mentioned, there are plenty of mini-mods that do the job.

Indeed, Hoplite phalanxes are perfectly well in Guard Mode without the shieldwall ability (even though I do use them in my game). Even though I play with BI and have enabled the shieldwall ability for several units, I rarely use it. And that, because formations tend to get messy and your guys push way too much. In Guard Mode, they tire much slower and can be used for a long period of time to pin an enemy unit for you to outflank them.

Those phalanxes are good enough I beleve, they are (almost) impenetrable from the front. Only if phalanxes had a rear guard then I can they they are completely invincible.

Btw, I thought shield wall was only for those short speared units.

Shield Wall is a joke, it's totally useless. Plus the AI has no idea how to use it effectively so get ready for an even more moronic opponent. It makes Hoplite's less flexible and maneuverable than a pike phalanx.

We are speaking about Hoplite phalanxes and not Makedonian phalanxes. Hoplites are normal spearmen in EB, they didn't have a special ability, too represent their kind of phalanx. At the moment you can only order them to stay in guradmode to hold their positions (which works fine if you ask me). Ceterum censeo Romam esse delendam.
