Around what age do you guys usually retire your generals, or do you have them marching to war until they die of old age? I'd say for me it's mid to late 50's where I find a nice settlement, give out his military ancillaries in exchange for administrative ones, and let him relax as a governor in his halcyon days.
All men will one day die, but not every man will truely live.

I, for one, do not retire my generals until they reach maximum management and influence. However much time that takes. Then I just send them to govern my largest and potentially enriching cities on the ends of my empire. Then the general's penalties will be the most effective in curbing corruption, increasing happiness and boosting income through management. Thus, I replace my generals often, so as to give everyone a chance for the double ten, or the state of having 10 management and influence. Which is very common for me.

I assign different generals to differnent portions of the empire and there they stay, doing whatever is necessary. On quiet frontiers some of them never fight, while in territories nearby enemy nations or in rebelious areas they sometimes go from one battle to another day after day until they fall stone dead out of the saddle. It creates a huge imbalance in who has governing ability and who has fighting abilty, but I'm not going to march all my generals back and forth across my lands all day because that will be painfully annoying and potentially disasterous, as some of the more managment-oriented guys will end up losing battles that the veterans would have won. (this has been a problem more than once)

I send my supreme general to go conquer into a specific direction, they will gain fmae and glory. I will keep them fighting until they drop dead or if they have extreme movement penalties, usually their son is then ready to take over.

My generals are usually assigned settlements in various regions which they are required to both administer and protect. Additionally, some generals are permanent members of the military establishment, who have their own regional military forces (legions, per se). I have an Italian Army, A Barbarian Army, a Royal Guard Division (Elite Greek/Epirote units), an Asian Army, and a Marine Corp. Each of these armies is lead by a career general, and they all have a particular regional flavor in their make-up. Although I do move these armies around to whichever fronts are hot, they generally return to their home regions for retraining or during peace time. The generals of these armies serve until about 55 - 60 and then they go run some nice settlement somewhere, unless they are a recruited general and then they may die at war. The exception is if I conquer a nice province with a family member, that individual can choose to remain there (Syracuse, Pergamon etc) while the army moves on and receives a new commander. Most of my family members are career governors whose only military experience might be bringing the local militia to a fight in an emergency.

When do the warriors retire? Ideally 55-60, unless they are recruited, then they retire upon death or severe illness that debilitates the army by slowing them down...

Retirement? Do you guys have some sort of pension scheme going on or something?
I usually retire people based on achievements rather than age, for instance if someone has a great campaign, or wins an heroic victory(heroic by my judgement, not the games) I will usually give them a nice big city to fleece..

I usually keep my generals going until they start getting old age negative traits. My generals are usually lifetime fighters, so they never make very good governors since they rarely have managment traits.

Depends on faction in my case. Civilized ones are more complicated, but at the time I have a Saka campaing going with full (horse)steam. In there case I prefer to have the heir fight a long time (age 45 already has 8 commandstars - not the Kings son will become the heir, but usually the best warlord) he usually retires a while after becoming King or when he is getting old. The next heir is possibly already in the army ready to take over command.

If a family member becomes a Warmonger he might decide that a "simple" death in bed is not good enough for him and he might make a suicide charge to die like a true warrior (taking as many of the enemy with him as possible so they can serve him in the afterlife).

Some FMs however never want to fight so they stay behind to govern the provinces of the empire.

I try to let my FMs do what they want to do, those that are just total no goes in settlements(like restless warmongers) fight until they are 50 then they get a young (<20) other FM assigned and continue until they realy get to lame or die.

Same here, though I usually deploy my faction heir to lead my grand campaigns once he's mid to late twenties, preferably leaving a son or two behind with the faction leader in the capital. Lesser family members govern the big cities and lead small campaigns.

I really like keeping the royal family trees alive, and RPing with them! This went exceptionally well with Epirus. Also with my old pre 1.0 Makedonian campaign I couldnt have a better name for a faction heir, Perseus. This time in history he actually conquered the Carthaginian empire.... I still hate it that the savegame got lost because my hard disk melted... it was my learning campaign, that Makedonian campaign was so awesome! I was very far with forging an awesome empire. This pre1.0 also missed the Central European ridiculous AI armies. So I had the finish the Germanics off early, then I established a peaceful front with the Arverni as buffer. It was actually Alkyneus, which every seasoned Makedonian player knows, who conquered Germania, took him around his whole life. First he conquered the rebellious Danube provinces, finished the Getai, then was involved in an unwanted German war, the regions were extremely unruly. Glad I upgraded Sweboztraustastamnoz (did I just spelled that correct in one go without thinking?!?!) to a nice example of a hellenic city!

Sorry for wandering OT with the thougths of my Nostalgic Makedonian campaign...

After 55-60 as you know they have less movement points, I transfer battle ancillaries to a younger general. and under my mod I swap commander-in-chiefs mostly I give around 20-25 to a sharp/charismmatic/vigourous men. and retired general finnaly may have time to relax and womanize

    Default AW: Retirement

Depends on the General. If he's a real monster, with like 4 command stars, 10 management and 10 influence, I better don't have him sit idly with the army in my capital...

If he's got the faithful or devoted trait, I trust him much and are normally very happy if he manages to surpass the magic 62/63 years of age border. I he's not so devoted, I normally won't endear him with command over a royal army. No way, unless I have no other choice. When the war is over, he will then retire in a backwater where he eventually gets "melancholic" trait.

In my experience, settled generals seem to die a few years sooner than their campaigning friends. Probably from pleasuring the hordes of slave girls he's gathered on campaign or such nonsense. But nonetheless, I usually keep my generals campaigning until their sons can take over(you need new good generals when your old good generals die).

    Wink Re: Retirement

Depends on what faction I play...

    As "Civilized faction, except Romani"
Usually I got only one or two generals campaigning, usually had 8,9 or even 10 command stars in his 45s, while they in the field at 60's, they usually "carry" much younger FM's (usually 17 or 18th, after some time sit in academia) with smaller armies behind him to act as his "student" (very seldom his son, usually grandson!!!), and take on his position (and almost all his military ancillaries) if he hit 70's... after that, the "retired" general usually sit in a province nearby his student to watch his action, and reinforce if necessary... (usually they got warmonger traits... so sitting them down in city isn't a good option)

    As Romani...
Teleport the FM back to italy when he hit 65's, especially when he got triumph, after that, sit in some backwater town... or if he got "fatal" warmonger trait... stand until death in Italy...

    As Nomads / Barbarians
Campaign until got a heroic death, with his "student" then briefly teleport to capital (act as delivering his body), and then continue the campaign...

And my generals who get "Scarred, Vigorous, Spartan, Seen the elephant" trait, usually life into his 90s with many girls arround him, while his less healthy brothers usually die peacefully in his 70's

Retire? Bah, for women! My sweboz general would fight till 80 if they'd live till then! when a Gen get the Coward and so trait, of when he flees a battle, or he becomes a distant (veeery distant) admin. in some faraway shithole, or I roleplay he can't stand the public opinion and he courageously charge to his death alone,in battle... and I do play all my Battles, never autocalc, I like to se him die... it was only a coward afterall!!! then all my gen are warmonger, restless warmonger, and there's another step after that, wich I forget the name, wich give you full of bad trait but makes you so damn hot on the battlefield! I LOVE IT!

between 35-45. i always let my generals lead an army right off the bat at 16 y/o. i assign them to a particular region on the outskirts of the empire bordering a hostile state(s) such as in taras, near the romaoi. of course they are carefully chosen, usually having sharp/charismatic/vigorous and loyal. i roleplay dull and/or langourous generals as dissenters/rebellious bastards and send them on impossible missions to roleplay executions or the defeat of a rebellion. anyway, by 35 my career generals have already fought nonstop (i tend to NOT steamroll enemies, instead allowing them to recover during a truce/forced alliance so that i won't ever run out of interesting battles to fight. the romani are a DELIGHT to exterminate) for 19 years, which is a pretty long military career that's provided each of them a long list of (heroic) victories. by their 30th year i start to look for a successor, by 35-40, i've usually found one, however there were several cases where my generals were forced to soldier on for an average of 10 more years because of a lack of 'worthy' family members (and thus a heap of 16-20 year-old already-dead men).

also, at certain times when a region is being attacked in many directions and it would be impossible to defend with only 1 army and general, a retired general could be recalled and an army given to him (i always have five small armies ('marines') stationed at sea, one each in the aegean, black, eastern mediterranean, ionian, and ligurian seas as emergency reinforcements.

After a bloody battle, even the most civilized Strategos of Makedonian, Hellen, Seleukid, Ptolemaioi, Baktrian, and Epirote.... still take a little delight in raping girls from enemy civilians.... that's why most of my generals get "Pervert" line of traits...

i said ''if they'd live till 80'' !!! Don't worry, I know how fight an 80 ys man! anyway roleplay wise, for sweboz, my FM's, running for glory and heroic act, to be worthy of Deiwoz, practicly all dies in Battle. Because, not not strategicly wise, however, my Gen is always on First Line, along with his men, and charge along with them as well! This is, of corse, as roleplay, because... warmonger, and supper ubber warmonger, all mt FM's get it at one point of the other. And a sweboz would not support the shame to be in the second line!!!
Yeah, i prefer roleplay than pure strategy... it's my fun!

Follow the tip of a real warrior (That's mean, sweboz!) and send as administrator only the ''cowards'' and so, as punishment! Heros die in Hero... Not in a consular bed! but on the piles of bodies he killed before in the battle he heroicly died in, so he can now go eat and fight in peace among the Gods in the Valhallah while waiting for the Ultimate battle of the Gods against the Giants, deciding the outcome of living and deads!
