well i did not really play it long enough , it did seem complex at the time , i recall when starting a battle you can only line up your units in formation and order them to charge and maybe 2 other commands.. no point and clicking around the map .

Yeah I've got this one. Dated by today's standards but still very playable. I discovered this gem about 3 years ago so I didn't have the benefit of nostalgia changing my perception of it. They also did an early Italy game and an ancient Egypt one. They are worth picking up if you can grab them cheap.

Tried the demo once. Quite an interesting game, even though outdated by today's standards.

Very similar to the game Legio 31. I played it for some time when I was a kid. By today's standards it is hugely outdated.

Actually I really loved this game back in the day. It had a lot of depth, and was a great deal of fun to play. I never played turn based games until I picked Spartan up, and I scoffed at the very idea of that game format. The game itself plays out similarly to a "total war game" although it has greater strategic depth and many more factions. The great weakness of the game is that the battles are not RTS, like total war, but your army follows only a few scripted maneuvers. Also, the unit rosters are pretty limited, although if you are into Classical Greek warfare the map is unparalleled. This game changed my mind about turn based gaming, and to this day I primarily play in that format. Later that year (2004) "Rome Total War" came out, and I never really looked back. If Spartan had true RTS battles, I think it would have been a better game than RTW, because it had a more interesting strategic element, and the city building aspect was much more developed and important to the gameplay. I still load up the game every couple of years when I don't really feel like fighting battles (the randomness of victory might be considered realistic) but overall Rome Total War ended "Spartan's" captivation for me. I don't think that it really would hold up well for an EB player at this point, but if you are really in love with Classical Greece you might enjoy the game a little bit. I personally am glad that I found that game when I did, as I really enjoy turn based strategy gaming now, and I am thankful that Slitherine made that title. I keep an eye on what that developer does to this day, and i even purchased some of their later games to encourage their development process. The truth is, if there is ever a "Spartan 2" I would probably buy it regardless of the game's initial reviews.

Slitherine is from deadliest warrior too, I really liked the Taliban IRA match up.
