What next?

So we're in the middle of the biggest economic recession since the 1930's. Some of us are in VERY deep....water... but some of us drowned already (I'm talking about unemployment, foreclosures and so on...) and there are some which are about to drown if they aren't going to be saved soon.

The question is, what next? What's going to happen with this world? Obama, when he took power, I had faith in him, but now, I lost almost all of it. He's a brilliant speaker but efficiency wise he's kind of a bust. In m own country, the economy is a total catastrophe. While we are far away from the likes of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia, I wonder how much it will take until everything will go down like a perfectly arranged domino waiting for the starting touch. How much until we reach the bottom?

What's the next logical step we will do when either 1. we fail 2. we survive ? Continue the things that we are doing or change according to the world?

What annoys me is that I'm getting into my college years (finishing next year) and the way things are shaping up, it's going to be BAD. Paying 30-40k a year for university and having a decent life (I'm not a party guy that much) will be a strain...

So, what's the next step for everyone?

Yeap, 30-40k a year for university. I plan on attending uni in UK and since I'm a student from abroad I have to pay the full taxes plus other stuff. I basically have to manage myself so most probably I will get a student loan to pay everything.

Choose VERY carefully. There's only a few that are conceivably worth that, and then only on certain courses.

We are seeing the slow bleeding of money, resources and power out of the Europe / USA sphere into the Asian sphere. There increasingly isn't the money to go on doing what has been done. As soon as the East stops buying up debt the reach of Europe / USA will be far less. It's already happening a bit, but to change too quickly risks destabilisation and of course undermines the trillions of dollars of debt they've already got.

Maybe some thought it should have stalled. I know some said several months ago that 2009 will be the year we feel it the most, as it was only in late 2008 it finally went downhill. IIRC some are even saying the US unemployment numbers for May was not as bad as it could have been so maybe it already is stalling.

Recessions don't go away in a few months so I see no reason to be all that gloomy. For those who lose a job it is bad of course.

c - Nothing happens, we go through it, complain a bit, burn some stuffs during a few riots, and that's about it.

I'd be more interested in outcome b, but I think c is much more likely. The real question is, will Europe and the US keep their rank after the crisis, or are they doomed to become second rate players ?

Kinda reminds me of the Fall of the Roman Empire, as more wealth flowed to the East in exchange for silk/jade/spice, the West was less and less able to cope with migrating groups who eventually overwhelmed them.

I went to an in state university widely regarded as a "party school" (ie the students get drunk and skip classes). But the thing is, it wasn't that different from any big university. I knew people who got drunk several times a week, but I also knew very studious people. I put in effort and got a good education. The important thing is what you choose to do at university, not if it has a party school reputation.

I don't think going to a British Uni would be worth it. I'll admit I don't know about unis in your country, but I very seriously doubt you couldn't get a good education if you wanted to.

Unless you can get into Oxford or Cambridge or a big name school like that, I'd recommend skipping the UK idea just because of the cost. If that is your goal, it might also be worth looking at Ivy League schools in the United States. Otherwise, staying in Romania might be alright, but you could always try Switzerland, France, or Germany.

Yeah fortunately we have a fairly pro-active government actually willing to put us into deficit... I really am so glad Howard was defeated at the last election because I know his entire solution would've been spending and tax cuts. And yeah... press beat-ups here are ridiculous.

Also - it sounds like the University experience in Romania is the same as University here. Love it

Yeah, that's weird. I didn't pay to study in Canada (other than the french tuition fees). I can't fathom why you would have to while living in Romania. Either Romania or the UK is living in a weird pinko world.

Hmm, I did not know that. Visas on Romania... that's bad. I have to check what's the current status of Bulgaria.

Anyway, people... start learning Chinese or Japanese...

What happens with the economy now is a more mild scenarios of what happened before the collapse of the Communism (it's strange that the both systems reached to a similiar result). People just ate what they are going to eat tomorrow. The Communist system was too inefficient to recover. The capitalism seems to be more flexible i.e. crisis fix that... Yet, I can not agree it is good system to borrow the moeny for tomorrow and to spend them today... I believe we have a similiar problem with the environment.

Obama improving the whole world? It will be hard for him to fix USA, I think. I am afraid that even the EU won't help the Eastern Europe. All we have to do is to try to swim bleeding to death after the horrible bite of the World Crisis shark.Who knows? It could get better soon... I hope so.

Life goes on? Despite the economic setbacks, I can hardly see how this could be even remotely comparable to the economic conditions people endured in the 1930s. It wasn't a matter of "I don't know if I can afford to go to this college, it may cost too much" instead it was "I don't know if I can afford to feed my family." If this is the worst of it, I don't see much reason for complaining.

Well, you shouldn't base your opinion on that matter solely upon a video game forum. Of course most people here are somewhat well-off, as they can spare time to discuss politics, history and what not.

The millions who lost their jobs lately might be wondering how they'll feed their family in a near future.

The situation still isn't really comparable to the Great Depression though.

And when people try to call it a "failure of capitalism" I just laugh...
