Default Strangest Heroic Victory ever .

So here I am besieged by Pontos at Pella , I am the KH and have decided to meet them upon the walls .

Besides the fact that you must never set your hoplites on guard when upon the walls , I forgot it that way and they got creamed in the beggining , when closing at the end of the battle , after having massacred all of his infantry I decided to meet his cavalry outside the walls so that I can kill his general , his 4 units of cavalry and evaporate the stack from the map .

So as soon as battle was engaged , general still alive , no cavalry units routed I suddenly get a "Heroic Victory" screen , end of battle and my general stuck with the trait indifferent to siege ( I think that this is supposed go away after the siege was over .

    Huh ?

What on earth happened ? Is my RTW game in some way broken ? I doubt that this is an EB issue .

Oh , just so you know , my time limit is set to " off " , of course .

He has no way to get into the city with just cavalry left.

If you deprive him of all means to enter the city: no seige engines left/ no units suitable of using them left, the AI accepts your Superiority and resigns.

Funny, they never accepted that in my campaigns, even if I destroyed all of their siege engines...

Sometimes the AI is so stubbern (or stupid?) that he won't retreat until all his infatry is dead - he might be waiting for you to sally or might have some ladders at the walls, but doesn't send infantry over it.

That is why I sometimes turn on "battle time limit" when besieged so the AI either has to move or retreat/loose rather then stand in one place for all eternity...

No, this happen when Ai dont have any infantry, and was unable to break the walls. And also dont have any siege machine left. so the cavalry retreats. it happens often with me, in RTW and well medieval2. Even if they have infantry, they will only retreat when infantry began to rout, but if they got stuck and and fighting to the death, the general wont retreat.
And they will only remain outside of walls if they have infantry alive, not cav.

Well after I killed off his infantry I did step outside the city walls and and engaged his cavalry and with the battle going outside the city walls before any of his remaining units routed I got a heroic victory screen .

    That's what I found so confusing .

So what you're saying is seeing as there wasn't a way for them to enter the city they withdrew ? Even though we battled at the time ? Hmmm , come to think of they charged at my general only after a routing unit captured the city gate .

Could it be then that they withdrew as soon as they lost the gate again ?

So I am to assume that all goes well and nothing is broken at my game ?

    Thanks for answering guys .

P.S. : How do you turn on battle time limit when in a campaign ? Is it available form the game options from the in battle game menu , or the campaign menu ?

Talking Re: Strangest Heroic Victory ever .

I had exact same thing happen to me, but I rationalised that it was automatic RTW game mechanic. Basically, I heroically defended Ippone from a fullstack of Carthies, playing as Eperios, with only four units of Camillian Hastati. I killed all the foot units, and just one 64-men (large units size) Kart-Hadastim General's Bodyguard was left. I was about to order my units to step down from the walls to move against that last remaining units, but I suddenly got the Victory Screen, while the BG was still on the map, not routed, not retreating, just standing right outside my walls.

EDIT: Pretty annoying, as I really wanted to finalise the battle and kill their 10 inf., command, and manag. Faction Leader.

I remember in my long gone Makedonia campaign that a full stack of Lusotannans, besieging Gader's stone wall, were just waiting to be shot to pieces by my towers...
